Catching up with Tesla, NIO is reportedly planning to develop its own chips

If traditional cars compete with each other in internal combustion engine technology, then future-oriented new energy vehicles will undoubtedly compete with each other in computing power similar to that of smartphones.

After launching the "rental battery pack" service to effectively alleviate the problem of power anxiety, NIO seems to have also seen the above trend. According to insiders, NIO is planning to develop its own chips, but the project is only driven by Li Bin, so it may still take some time before it is implemented.

It is understood that Tesla is the first manufacturer among many new car manufacturers to develop its own chips, and it was officially put into commercial use in mass-produced cars in April 2019. According to industry authorities, Tesla's self-developed chips will help Tesla get rid of its dependence on chip manufacturers such as Nvidia, and on the other hand, it will also allow Tesla to control its product pace more freely and build core competitiveness.

At present, most of the new domestic car manufacturers choose to adopt ready-made chip solutions. For example, Ideal and Xiaopeng have both set their sights on Nvidia's Orin chip that will be mass-produced in 2022.

Once NIO's self-developed chips are launched, it may also be able to build a high-barrier technological moat.
