Tesla showcases 4680 battery without tabs: cost reduced by 86%, density increased by 5 times

As competition in the new energy vehicle industry continues to evolve, consumers' attention to electric vehicles has also begun to shift to upstream battery technology. At this year's Tesla Battery Day, Musk released the revolutionary 4680 battery, which attracted the attention of global media and consumers.

Musk introduced the many advantages of the 4680 battery at Battery Day, saying that this battery uses a laser-engraved tab-free design, which removes the main heat-generating components of the battery, reduces internal resistance, and improves thermal stability and controllability. Compared with tab-based batteries, it achieves a 5-fold increase in single-cell energy density, a 6-fold increase in power, and a 16% increase in cruising range.

Recently, Tesla announced the assembly information of the first batch of 4680 batteries. It is reported that the new battery pack adopts a module-free design, each consisting of 960 batteries, arranged in a 40x24 pattern. Because the energy density is increased by 5 times, compared with the 2170 composed of thousands of batteries, the 4680 battery is much less.

With the support of new assembly and battery pack design, Musk said that the cost of 4680 batteries has dropped by 86%, and the cost per KWh has dropped by 76%. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, the cost advantage is more obvious.

The 4680 battery will be produced by Panasonic. Tesla and Panasonic will build a new production line at the Nevada Super Factory. This will be Panasonic's 14th production line at the Tesla factory. After the new production line is put into operation, the factory's production capacity will increase by 10% to 39GWh per year.

It is worth mentioning that Musk also said that the revolutionary 4680 battery has been used in some prototypes. Tesla did not explicitly support the model equipped with 4680, but it is generally speculated that the car should be the Model S Plaid version with an acceleration of a little over 2 seconds per 100 kilometers and a range of 840km.
