NIO envied Tesla and booked the production line of CATL to launch lithium iron phosphate models this year

Recently, the supply chain reported that NIO has booked the entire lithium iron phosphate battery production line of CATL. If nothing unexpected happens, NIO will launch a lithium iron phosphate version of the car in 2021.

It is understood that although lithium iron phosphate has been gradually replaced by ternary lithium batteries due to policy reasons since 2015, due to its high cost and inherent flammability and explosion problems, coupled with the continuous improvement of lithium iron phosphate batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries have gradually attracted the attention of many car companies since last year. The latest data from the Power Battery Application Branch of the China Chemical and Physical Power Sources Industry Association shows that in the first 11 months of 2020, China's lithium iron phosphate battery production reached 28.0GWh, a year-on-year increase of 5.7%.

Industry analysts said that the reason why NIO chose to launch the lithium iron phosphate version of the car in 2021 is also related to the trend of the entire new energy vehicle industry. On New Year's Day 2021, Tesla announced a price cut for the Model Y, and the Model Y long-range version was reduced to RMB 339,900. Subsequently, some media revealed that the orders for the Model Y exceeded 100,000 in just one day.

Therefore, whether it is the strategic need of "walking on two legs" or the need to seize the market, it is very necessary for NIO to launch a cheaper lithium iron phosphate version of its car.
