New energy vehicle patent list released: Traditional car companies are good at invention, while new forces are strong in appearance

Technology and innovation are the focus of the development of new energy vehicles, and the number of patent applications is a concentrated reflection of the innovation capabilities of new energy vehicle manufacturers.

Recently, Qichacha Big Data Research Institute released the "Top 20 New Energy Vehicle Patent Companies List". From the list, we can see that BYD has a total of 9,426 valid patents and is firmly in the first place. The number of patents exceeds the sum of the second and third place Changan Automobile and BAIC New Energy, which have 5,243 and 4,005 valid patents respectively.

Among the new forces in car manufacturing, NIO ranks first with 1,677 valid patents, and ranks sixth in the overall list after the merger of the main entities.

Looking at the three lists of invention patents, utility model patents and design patents, BYD topped the first two lists, while Changan Automobile dominated the list of design patents.

On the invention patent list, BYD, Changan Automobile and BAIC New Energy ranked the top three, with 4,368, 1,261 and 934 respectively.

As for new car manufacturers, the number of invention patents is obviously slightly lower. WM Motor has the most, with 293 patents; NIO ranks second with 172 patents, and Leapmotor ranks third with 162 invention patents.

BYD, Changan Automobile and BAIC New Energy ranked top three on the utility model patent list, with 3,397, 2,637 and 2,391 patents respectively.

The top three new car-making forces are NIO (978 applications), Li Auto (479 applications), and Leapmotor (373 applications).

The top three in the list of TOP20 new energy vehicle companies in terms of appearance design patents are Changan Automobile (1,345), SAIC (1,227), and BYD (1,061).

The ranking of new car-making forces is: NIO first (527), Li Auto second (228), and AIWAYS third (174).

In general, traditional car companies have more accumulation in invention patents, while new car manufacturers are stronger in utility model patents and design patents.

Data shows that excluding December in 2020, global sales of new energy vehicles increased by more than 30% year-on-year. Data shows that in 2020, 78,600 new energy vehicle-related companies were added, and new energy vehicles showed explosive growth on both the supply and consumption sides.
