The "death airbags" produced by Japanese auto parts supplier Takata have had a huge impact on the global auto industry. Since the first recall in 2008, 13 years have passed and automakers are still recalling airbags due to high temperatures. According to media reports, the US auto safety regulator asked Ford Motor Company to recall 3 million vehicles on the 19th, still due to Takata airbag defects. It is reported that the recall covers all Ford models from 2006 to 2012. For car companies, recalls mean huge financial costs. Takata had previously promised car companies that it would share the costs of recalls. However, due to the large number of recalled cars, the estimated costs were as high as $24 billion, which was six times Takata's total assets. In the end, Takata filed for bankruptcy due to the heavy burden of recalls. As a result, the financial costs of recalling cars will have to be borne by the car companies themselves. The recall of 3 million cars is like adding insult to injury for Ford, which has been in poor financial condition recently. Takata was once one of the world's three largest airbag manufacturers and has maintained long-term cooperation with brands such as BMW, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, and Honda around the world. In order to reduce costs, Takata used ammonium nitrate in the gas generator of the airbag. This substance can easily cause an explosion after it becomes damp and deteriorates, posing a danger to front-seat passengers. It is called the "death airbag" by the media. According to statistics, Takata's "death airbags" caused 23 deaths and more than 290 injuries worldwide in the decade from 2008 to 2018, and most of these accidents occurred in the United States. Since then, the recall of cars equipped with Takata airbags has begun, and a total of 100 million cars from 19 automakers have been recalled so far.
