All-solid-state batteries are safer and have higher energy density, but American academicians believe that they will not be available before 2030

Recently, Wang Chaoyang, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, expressed his views on all-solid-state battery technology, saying that its mass production will be achieved after 2030.

Wang Chaoyang said that with the current technological progress, it will take more than ten years for all-solid-state batteries to reach mass production conditions in terms of technology and manufacturing processes. Of course, this is in the absence of unexpected major scientific breakthroughs.

Chen Liquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, once said that developing a new generation of batteries and allowing the automotive industry to gradually transition from lithium-ion batteries to all-solid-state batteries will become the main task of the battery industry in the future.

Lithium-ion batteries have dominated the electric vehicle industry today due to their high energy density, high efficiency and low self-discharge rate. However, lithium-ion batteries generally use flammable liquid electrolytes, which can cause fire and explosion after being punctured, causing serious safety issues.

In addition, the current lithium-ion battery has reached an energy density of 300 watt-hours per kilogram, which is close to the theoretical performance limit of lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, solid-state batteries are safer, have no risk of spontaneous combustion and explosion, and have a significantly higher energy density than current lithium-ion batteries.

In recent years, with the expansion of the new energy vehicle market and the rapid development of industries such as mobile phones, electric vehicles, power tools, and digital cameras, the demand for lithium batteries has continued to grow, and my country's lithium battery production has also increased year by year. It is expected that by 2026, the market size of my country's lithium battery industry will exceed 260 billion yuan.
