After eight years of hard work in the audio-visual industry: IPTV listing was criticized, and OTT has not yet made money

It is said that there was a conference in Chengdu the day before yesterday and yesterday. All the big and small players in the national radio and television industry attended the conference, which caused the GDP of Chengdu to soar. All kinds of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, bath centers, and KTVs were packed. . .

Of course, in addition to those in the radio and television industry, there are also those in the Internet industry. For Phoenix TV's Chun Ge, there was also a circle of friends who made a joke:

However, I did not go. Firstly, the low-end population had to stay in the capital, and secondly, I had more important tasks to accomplish. This kind of meeting was attended by tall, beautiful, rich, thin and handsome people. I was a greasy, fat middle-aged man, so I had to live on a bowl of oily pulled noodles.

As expected, the seven famous Internet TV license operators gathered in Chengdu this time and established an Internet TV (License) Working Committee under the China Network Audiovisual Program Association. After eight years of hard work, OTT finally has hope? !

Or should we huddle together for warmth during the winter?

According to information released by a certain company, the cumulative shipments of various OTT box terminals + smart TVs on the market have exceeded 200 million. If divided equally among seven companies, each of them would have at least 30 to 40 million. Of course, some manufacturers must report higher numbers than this. The exact number is up to you to decide.

Because there are less than 400 million households with broadband access, and the three major operators, China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, have 130 million, 110 million and 80 million respectively. There are 30 million cable households in various places, Dr. Peng has several million paying users, and 21Vianet sold AEP to Founder, and the two of them together have several million households. It is impossible that the terminals are outnumbered by broadband users.

What’s more, many people’s smart TVs at home are not connected to broadband, nor do they have OTT boxes!

When it comes to the number of users, there are always higher mountains than the other, but when it comes to revenue, except for a central-level licensee who has made a fortune in silence, everyone has avoided the topic. Another company is busy with layout and financing, and another is busy with internal personnel changes and running-in.

SO, making profits from OTT is a joke. In addition to the high copyright fees and CDN bandwidth, the very few paid members and the dismal advertising, it is impossible to support a business model. Even the three major video websites lose billions of dollars every year and rely entirely on BAT for financial support.

Of course, the IPTV broadcast control of the local TV station's new media is an exception. They almost all make huge profits because there is no copyright cost. All the signals are live broadcasts from CCTV and provincial satellite TV stations. There is no CDN fee either. The local Telecom and Unicom both bear the cost, so they are seeking mixed-ownership reform financing and listing.

The IPO represented by Chongqing Radio and Television New Media was severely criticized by the China Securities Regulatory Commission. For detailed reasons, please refer to the historical articles of "Shi Shuo Xin Yu". But where can these high profits be realized? Mango TV gave another idea:

The listed company Happy Shopping announced that it spent a huge amount of money to acquire the equity of five companies including Happy Sunshine (Mango TV) held by its parent company, and put all the IPTV, OTT, video website, mobile TV and other businesses in Hunan into the listed company, achieving a PE of dozens of times.

However, the combined profits of these five target companies were negative in 2015 and 2016, but each of them promised to achieve a cumulative net profit of 4.1 billion in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, an average of 1 billion per year.

Can it be achieved? God knows! Anyway, it’s a bet.

OTT loses money and does not make money, but IPTV broadcast control is lucrative. IP and copyright are provided by Hunan Radio and Television Station for free. Who let Mango TV be born with a silver spoon in its mouth? It is really "It is better to have a good father than to be good at math, physics and chemistry"

Other licensees may not have such good conditions.

Except for being bound to one of the largest mobile communications operators.

But if the copyright costs and CDN fees are added, it will be the same as dying. After eight years of hard work, OTT has become a useless thing, which can neither go up nor down. Just hang in there and survive this winter. Perhaps spring will soon be here.

IPTV is also howling in the cold wind. Although the number of users has increased dramatically, its operations are fragmented, with each province being independent. The 110 million users are scattered among 62 provincial companies. It is difficult to have economies of scale in copyright procurement and content cooperation, and is repeating the mistakes of the decline of cable TV.

The cable TV is suffering the most. After experiencing its glorious peak at the end of 2015, it has been declining all the time. Users have been continuously diverted. By the end of the year, there will be less than 150 million paying users. Will there still be 100 million left by the end of 2018?

Even if there is really 100 million left, it is a rock-bottom that will not fall any further. After all, it is cheap. Compared with broadband that costs 50 or 100 yuan, cable TV that costs an average of 25 yuan per month is more suitable for the cultural and entertainment needs of the unequal and unbalanced masses. Of course, there are also local tycoons who would say, why not eat meat?!

400 million broadband + 100 million wired = 500 million Chinese households.

This is my friend's newly renovated house. There is a TV in the center. Except for the power supply, there is neither DVB box nor IPTV box. Although he is the CEO of China Unicom in a northern province, he does not have any OTT box. This TV is smart. When connected to WiFi, it has OS, UI and APK.

Movies, TV, sports, games, shopping, live streaming, on-demand... everything you need!

Are you sure you really need a box that is like a burden? The future is coming to you!
