Subaru, known as the next Suzuki, released its first pure electric car, which will be launched next year

Japanese automobile brand Subaru today unveiled the company's first pure electric vehicle, Solterra, and announced that it will be officially mass-produced and launched in 2022, landing in the Japanese, European, North American and Chinese markets.

Solterra will use the platform jointly developed with Toyota, which is also used in the bZ4X model announced by Toyota at the Shanghai Auto Show. Solterra is positioned as a mid-size SUV. Subaru has not disclosed more parameters, but it is certain that it will use a full-time four-wheel drive system. Subaru disclosed its electrification strategy for the next decade in January last year, announcing that it will jointly develop pure electric and hybrid models with Toyota.

Subaru President Tomomi Nakamura said that Toyota is in the leading position in the field of electrification, and Subaru has a high level in the field of horizontally opposed engines, so cooperation is conducive to the common development of both parties. In January this year, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that Japan will completely ban the sale of fuel vehicles in 2035, which has also prompted Japanese automakers to accelerate the development of new energy vehicles. At the Shanghai Auto Show in April this year, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and other brands also displayed New Electric Dynamic model.

Analysts pointed out that China has a huge demand for new energy vehicles and has strong auto parts production capabilities. Therefore, new energy vehicles are likely to become a key connection point for future China-Japan economic cooperation.

However, the booming Chinese market seems to have nothing to do with Subaru. In 2019, Subaru sold 1.042 million vehicles worldwide, but the Chinese market contributed only a fraction of that - 25,000 vehicles, and was dubbed "the next Suzuki" by Chinese netizens. According to Subaru car owners, there are not many models that can be found on new cars, and Subaru is one of them. As for other various automatic functions, it is completely missing.
