Tesla's Shanghai factory will produce 500,000 vehicles a year, exporting them to Europe to fill the gap in German factory production

Recently, according to people familiar with the matter, Tesla's Shanghai Super Factory's annual production of electric vehicles has reached 450,000 units, achieving the goal set by the company in its fourth-quarter 2020 financial report.

Currently, Tesla's Shanghai factory is responsible for the production of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. After achieving the annual production target of 450,000 vehicles, the factory will move towards the goal of 500,000 vehicles per year.

At this year's second quarter earnings conference, Tesla also revealed that the Shanghai factory has become its main automobile export center and is expected to play an important role in exports to Europe in the third quarter.

At the same time, since Tesla's Berlin factory's license application has been blocked, the Shanghai factory will also be responsible for filling the production gap of the Berlin factory.

As early as 2014, Tesla CEO Musk showed interest in building a factory in China, and raised the idea again when he came to China the following year.

In 2017, the Tesla factory officially settled in the Nanhui New Town Industrial Zone in Shanghai, and Tesla became the first wholly foreign-owned automobile company in China.

In January 2019, Tesla's Shanghai factory officially started construction. On December 30 of the same year, the factory officially completed the delivery of the first batch of 15 Model 3s.

In 2020, due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, the resumption of production in foreign factories was hindered, while China resumed work and production. Therefore, Tesla's Changhai factory began to export electric vehicles to Europe, Australia and other places in October of that year.

In July this year, Tesla's Shanghai factory completed the second phase of construction of the first phase, expanding its production capacity to 450,000 vehicles per year.
