As the global market continues to decline, autonomous driving technology provider Mobileye comes to China to seek business support

Recently, Mobileye, a world-renowned provider of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AV) vision technology, signed a memorandum of understanding with China's largest state-owned automaker, FAW Group. Both parties expressed that they will establish a new partnership and give full play to their respective advantages in software, hardware, technology products, etc. to jointly develop more smart transportation and intelligent driving solutions.

The memorandum was signed by Liang Guiyou, Vice President of China FAW Group Corporation, and Nimrod Nehushtan, Executive Vice President of Mobileye. Qiu Xiandong, Chairman and Party Secretary of China FAW Group Corporation, Lei Ping, Vice President of China FAW Group Corporation, Amnon Shashua, President and CEO of Mobileye, and Elie Luskin, Vice President of Mobileye China, attended the signing ceremony.

Since its establishment in 1999, Mobileye has launched breakthrough technologies such as REM crowdsourcing mapping, True RedundancyTM sensing and Responsibility Sensitive Safety (RSS), providing solutions for future travel in the fields of ADAS and AV. Mobileye is also a global pioneer in the development of ADAS and AV solutions based on visual system analysis and data processing. The cooperation with FAW will not be limited by traditional partnerships, but will deepen cooperation to create more innovative experiences for users and build a more advanced, convenient and intelligent travel experience for the new era.

However, Mobileye faces numerous challenges in China's highly competitive and fast-growing AV industry.

In China, Mobileye has lagged behind its competitors such as Huawei, Baidu, WeRide and AutoX, which are developing their own AV technologies and platforms based on lidar, millimeter-wave radar, cameras and artificial intelligence, testing their fleets across China and working with local automakers, ride-hailing platforms and government agencies to accelerate the deployment of services.

After terminating its cooperation with Tesla due to differences in ideas, Mobileye also lost Ideal Auto and NIO in China. Many people questioned the safety and reliability of Mobileye's vision-based technology and believed that Mobileye could not cope with China's complex traffic scenarios. Some experts also believe that it is not enough for Mobileye to rely solely on cameras for perception. To achieve a high level of automation, LiDAR is essential because it can provide accurate depth perception and obstacle detection.

Therefore, 91che believes that it remains to be seen whether Mobileye can regain momentum in China through cooperation with FAW. Although FAW has expressed confidence in Mobileye's technology and is willing to integrate it into its smart travel strategy, it may also face pressure from other domestic and foreign players who may provide more advanced or cost-effective solutions. In addition, the two parties will also have to overcome technical, regulatory and cultural obstacles that may arise during the cooperation process.
