Bigger is better? How RAM size affects mobile phone performance
In today's mobile phone market, many manufacturers use the hardware configuration of the phone as almost all the selling points for marketing purposes. In addition to the processor (CPU), the running memory (RAM) is probably the second professional term that manufacturers often mention. Over time, consumers have formed a conclusion in their minds: the larger the RAM, the higher the phone configuration and the smoother the operation. If you ask them which phone is smoother, a phone with 3GB RAM or a phone with 2GB RAM, most consumers will blurt out: Of course, the 3GB one. But is this really the case? In fact, if some limiting conditions are added, the statement "the larger the RAM, the higher the phone configuration, and the smoother the phone runs" is still valid. From the earliest Android 1.0 to the latest Android 4.4.4, the improvement in system fluency is largely due to the increase in RAM. You know, in the Android 1.0 era, 192MB of RAM was already very good, but today, many brands' flagship phones have 3GB of RAM as standard, and many people's PC memory is still only 2GB... From the system's lag, poor multitasking, and poor multitasking to today's almost extremely smooth system experience, RAM is indeed one of the important reasons. No wonder many users blindly pursue high RAM indicators, but in fact, most users' understanding of RAM only stays at the data level, and ignores many other factors. For example, a mobile phone with 1GB of RAM, after flashing MIUI and using it for a period of time, the remaining RAM space is not as much as when flashing CM (a modified and improved version of the original Android OS, which can be simply understood as the original version of Android). The reason is actually very simple: MIUI is too bloated compared to CM. You know, MIUI focuses on rich functions, while CM focuses on simplicity. Here is a reminder to some novice users: the system operation also takes up RAM space. If the system takes up more, there will naturally be less left for users. At this time, whether you want MIUI, which has rich functions but takes up a lot of RAM, or CM, which has few customization items but can provide relatively large memory, depends on your personal preference. For another example, a mobile phone produced by a large manufacturer and a mobile phone produced by an unknown small manufacturer are both equipped with 1G RAM. I believe everyone knows which one will be smoother. The reason for this result is not only the coordination of hardware matching, but also the excellent optimization of the system by large manufacturers. It is even the main reason that mobile phones produced by large manufacturers run more smoothly than those of small manufacturers under the same space RAM. Back to the beginning of this paragraph, if we add the two qualifiers "the same system and even the same level of optimization" and "the upgrade of RAM and the coordinated upgrade of other core components", the sentence "the larger the RAM, the higher the configuration of the mobile phone, and the smoother the mobile phone runs" will be much more rigorous. Having said so much, in fact, we are more of a vertical comparison of Android mobile phones, but Android is not the only mobile phone operating system. iOS and WP are also excellent mobile phone operating systems, so next we will focus on horizontal comparison to see what impact the RAM size has on mobile phones with different operating systems. One thing that needs to be explained here is that, given that Android, iOS, and WP almost completely occupy the market share of mobile operating systems, we will not elaborate on other niche operating systems here. Compared with the running scores of tens of thousands of points for Android models, we seem to rarely hear about how many points the iPhone and Windows Phone have run. More often, we hear the evaluation words for iPhone and Windows Phone are "smoothness" and "user experience". Does Android have no smoothness and excellent user experience? Obviously not, but for various reasons, we are more accustomed to using running scores to measure the quality of an Android device. At this time, even with our thumbs, we can think of why mobile phones equipped with larger RAM space are more popular with some users, but does a high score necessarily mean a good user experience or system smoothness? Of course not. Common sense tells us that an Android phone with 1GB RAM is not as smooth as an iPhone 4s or Windows Phone equipped with 512MB RAM in most cases. So we can easily draw such a conclusion: the impact of RAM size on mobile phones is also related to the operating system. To sum up, Android needs a larger RAM space to ensure smooth operation due to system-level reasons, while iOS and WP are much better. Even if the RAM is small, the system will not appear obvious lag on low-end Android phones. In summary, the impact of RAM on mobile phones is not as simple as novice users think. In today's hardware implementation of the exaggerated style, we still recommend that manufacturers focus on system optimization. After all, software is the carrier that connects people and hardware.
