Mobile browsers: Google is about to take on Apple
Data from market research firm Net Applications shows that Apple's Safari browser's declining market share and Google's browser's growing market share make it possible for Google to surpass Apple on mobile platforms as early as October. Firefox's market share on desktop + mobile platforms has slipped in the past two months, with the desktop version continuing to "bleed" and efforts to attract smartphone users making no progress. Apple's Safari browser has also performed poorly since April, losing market share, mainly due to continued loss of market share on mobile platforms and a sudden decline in market share on desktop platforms. Net Applications said that in June, 17.3% of Internet users used mobile browsers to surf the Internet, and this proportion has increased by nearly 6 percentage points in the past 12 months, a growth rate of 52%. In June, Firefox's market share on desktop + mobile platforms was 12.9% - the lowest level in five years, down 1.2 percentage points from two months ago. Firefox's problem is still its lack of appeal to mobile device users. Although Firefox has been available on the Android platform for a long time and smartphones running Firefox OS are already on the market, its market share on mobile platforms is only 0.7%, which is only about one-third of Microsoft's IE, the second-to-last. In June, Firefox's market share on the desktop platform fell by 1.3 percentage points to 15.4%, the eighth consecutive month of decline. In the past year, Firefox's market share on the desktop platform has fallen by 3.6 percentage points, a drop of 19%. The decline in Firefox's market share can be described as "born at the wrong time" because the agreement between Mozilla and Google will expire in November, and the agreement with Google accounts for the vast majority of Mozilla's revenue. According to the agreement, Google is the default search engine in Firefox. For example, in 2012, Google paid Mozilla $272 million (about RMB 1.677 billion), accounting for 88% of the latter's revenue. Since Firefox's market share has fallen by 43% since June 2011, Mozilla will have much less bargaining chips in renewal negotiations. Apple's market share on the desktop + mobile platform has fallen from 13.1% two months ago to 12.3%, of which the iOS version of Safari accounts for nearly two-thirds of Apple's browser market share. Apple's market share has declined on both desktop and mobile platforms. Google has become the beneficiary of the loss of market share of Mozilla and Apple. Google's market share on desktop + mobile was 22.6% in June, up 1.5 percentage points from April. Google's market share on mobile reached 39.4%. However, desktop Chrome was the main reason for Chrome's overall market share increase in June. Desktop Chrome's market share increased by 1.6 percentage points to 19.3%, a new high. Microsoft Internet Explorer still dominated the desktop platform in June with a market share of 58.4% - the highest level since February 2011, but IE's market share on mobile platforms was only 2%. This brought IE's market share on desktop + mobile platforms to 48.4%, the same as in April. Opera's market share on desktop + mobile platforms increased from 1.8% in April to 2.2% in June, of which the mobile versions - Opera Mini and Opera Mobile accounted for 62%. Opera Android's default browser on Nokia X phones helped Opera's market share further.
