Restoring factory settings is not free from porn scandals

Security software developer Avast this week questioned the safety and thoroughness of the factory reset feature on Android. The company bought 20 second-hand Android phones to test whether it could recover the personal data of previous users from them. Each phone was restored to factory settings before being sold, so in theory Avast's experiment should not succeed, but the opposite was true. Using legal software that is available to everyone, Avast said it had recovered more than 40,000 photos from the phones. Many of the photos were of children, while others were sexy photos of women and men. In addition, Avast also recovered Google search keywords, emails and text messages. In addition, using data that was thought to have been permanently deleted, Avast successfully identified the original owners of four phones. Avast said that the data could only be truly deleted by overwriting the previous data. The American technology blog The Verge has contacted Google for more information about Android's factory reset feature and whether it can really prevent such data recovery. At present, the results of Avast's experiment are questionable. As an information security software company, Avast may have its own motivations, such as taking the opportunity to claim that its tools are more effective than those provided by Google. For iOS devices, Apple has a unique way of preventing data from being restored after being cleared. In newer devices, the reset function of iOS will remove the encryption key used to protect user data. Therefore, even if the user data can be recovered, the data cannot be read and will be useless. For older iPhones and iPod Touches, according to Apple, when users clear data, the system will overwrite user settings and information and write a series of "1"s to the data partition. In most cases, this can prevent unauthorized data recovery.
