If the Netherlands wins the World Cup: Free space tour for everyone
The Dutch national team is now one of the top four teams in the World Cup, and if they win the final, they will get an extra reward in addition to the glory of victory. They will have the opportunity to travel to space, making Robin van Persie a true "Flying Dutchman". This is the promise made by XCORAerospace, which says that if the Dutch team can win the championship, it will provide a free trip to space to every member of the team. But the odds may not be on the Dutch side. According to the prediction of the website FiveThirtyEight, they are the least likely team in the top four to win the championship, with a chance of winning of only 13%. But who knows? Space travel may be a great incentive. XCOR expects to begin commercial operations of its Lynx suborbital spacecraft in 2016. During a flight, XCOR's Lynx suborbital spacecraft will carry a passenger to an altitude of 100 kilometers. A ticket usually costs $95,000, so a free trip to space is a good treat. Why the Dutch team? Because this is where XCOR Space Expeditions is headquartered. The company formerly known as Space Expeditions was acquired by XCOR last week. Space Expeditions has served as XCOR's sales agent since 2011, and the company will now operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of XCOR. “As we got closer to our first test flight, we wanted to make sure all other ‘wet lease’ customers had an open sales platform that was not owned by a specific full-lease lessee, but owned by XCOR itself, the manufacturer of the spacecraft,” XCOR COO Andrew Nelson explained to me. “So as a natural progression of the company and to be in a position to succeed, we decided to bring it in-house as an open platform that all future wet leasers could use. It allows customers to be more closely associated with XCOR and present a common brand identity.” Space Expeditions’ parent company, Space Expeditions, NV, remains in place as a passive holding company, with shareholders who are the investors in XCOR’s $14.2 million Series B round that closed in May. According to Nelson, those investors also received an undisclosed amount of XCOR common stock as a result of the acquisition.
