"We, BYD, have the pricing power in the 100,000-200,000 yuan market."

When Wang Chuanfu said this last year, many people did not believe it. But on May 28, with the launch of the Qin L/Seal 06 DM-i priced at 99,800 yuan, those doubtful voices disappeared.

What does this mean? The A-class cars we are familiar with, such as Volkswagen Lavida, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, are all in this price range, but Qin L is a B-class car with a wheelbase of 2790mm.

This is no longer a price war, but a direct overturn of the table, shattering the price system of China's B-class car market in the past few decades. The starting price of joint venture B-class cars in the past was at least 170,000 or 180,000 yuan, but Qin L directly lowered the starting price to less than 100,000 yuan.


Why can BYD do it?

The biggest selling point of Qin L this time is BYD's fifth-generation DM technology. In fact, DM technology was not invented by BYD, but it was developed and promoted by BYD and became the mainstream new energy power model.

Let’s first take a look at what this technology can bring.

First of all, the range of Qin L is up to 120km in pure electric mode under CLTC conditions. Many people may not have an idea of ​​this. According to authoritative surveys, most Chinese consumers do not travel more than 30km per day. In other words, even if Qin L is only in pure electric mode, it can run for three or four days on a single charge.

What about long-distance driving? The Qin L has a comprehensive range of 2,100 km when fully fueled and fully charged. Due to differences in personal driving habits, this number may vary, but even if it can achieve a range of 1,800 km, it can completely eliminate the range anxiety of new energy vehicles. After all, the high-speed mileage from Beijing to Guangzhou is only 2,000 km.

The second is fuel efficiency. The official claims that Qin L has a minimum fuel consumption of only 2.9L per 100 kilometers under NEDC conditions, setting a new record for fuel consumption per 100 kilometers. Based on the price of 8 yuan/L of No. 92 gasoline, the cost of using the car per 100 kilometers is only about 25 yuan. But it should be noted that this is the fuel consumption when the battery is depleted. Who would buy a plug-in hybrid car and never charge it? If the use of both oil and electricity is taken into account, the cost of using this car per 100 kilometers may be around 10 yuan.

The status of this system in the industry can be described in one word: unrivaled. Looking through the entire sedan market, for B-class cars with a starting price of less than 100,000 yuan, apart from the Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i, there is only one rival, Wuling Xingguang.

In addition to the price, the 2.9L fuel consumption and 2,100km range are also unique in the industry. After this technology comes out, many brands will have sleepless nights. Many manufacturers have spent several years barely improving the plug-in hybrid system to a "usable" level, and are preparing to move towards the super hybrid DM-i system released by BYD three years ago, but on May 28, they suddenly discovered that the goal they have been pursuing has become an obsolete product in BYD.

Objectively speaking, the internal configuration of Qin L is not leading, or it is still some distance away from the mainstream B-class cars, especially in terms of smart cockpit and smart driving, where Qin L's performance barely reaches the passing line.

But BYD is not worried about this, as it has many models that can occupy various market segments. The selling points of Qin L are large space, low fuel consumption, long battery life and low price. It targets those who have a low car purchase budget, high space requirements, little interest in intelligence and strong battery life anxiety. It is not intended to take over the entire B-class car market.

In fact, Wang Chuanfu, a technical leader, has always been pragmatic in his understanding of product development. There is a group of people in the market who are ordinary family users. They buy cars for daily transportation and pursue a usable car without fancy configurations and functions. Think about it, how many ordinary people need those advanced driving assistance functions? What they care more about is: Is this car economical to use? BYD wants to capture these people.

There are actually quite a few such customers. As Wang Chuanfu said two years ago, more than half of Chinese families still don't have a car. If this is the case, then the fifth-generation DM technology will solve their urgent problems. Do customers want high-end configurations? They can choose BYD Han.

The launch of Qin L/Seal 06 DM-i will significantly boost BYD's sales. In fact, in the new energy era, B-class cars have always been a tough nut to crack for domestic cars. Even in the new energy era, there are not many domestic B-class cars that can really gain a foothold, and BYD's own Seal has also performed far below expectations in the market.

But now that the Qin L, which starts at 99,800 yuan, has come, the tightly closed door to the market is finally about to be broken. Qin L will not only contribute to BYD's sales, it can even rewrite the entire industry landscape. The reason is simple, facing a heavy weapon of the Qin L level, other manufacturers have almost no way to deal with it except to cut prices.

This is what Wang Chuanfu calls "pricing power". In the market below 200,000 yuan, BYD can set the rules for the entire industry with one car. In the B-class car market after the Qin L was launched, any car with a starting price higher than 100,000 yuan will find it difficult to gain an advantage over the Qin L, especially those joint venture B-class cars that have been under-equipped and priced for many years.

For consumers, this is actually good news. Models such as Camry, Passat, and Accord are much lower in configuration than domestic cars, but they have been able to stand firm for a long time, simply because there are no domestic competitors. Now that Qin L is on the market, its price breaks through the bottom line of previous B-class cars, and it is one generation ahead in technology. This is a competition that determines both superiority and death, and it cannot be solved by joint venture manufacturers lowering prices.

If nothing unexpected happens, the fifth-generation DM technology will be quickly popularized in BYD's other models. BYD will usher in a thorough renewal and the joint ventures will also face the final life-and-death battle.

Wang Chuanfu said at the beginning of the year that the market share of domestic cars will exceed 70% in the next three years. At that time, some people thought he was bragging. Now, do you still think it is difficult to achieve?
