Not only fingerprints, Win10 can also use irises to unlock PC

According to foreign media reports, Microsoft has added new features to Windows 10. The company released a new biometric authentication feature package, Windows Hello, on Tuesday, which aims to allow users to unlock all Windows 10 devices including PCs, screens and even smartphones through information such as fingerprints, irises or faces .

Microsoft notes that Windows Hellow will be able to use "biometric authentication technology to help users achieve instant device access experience" - of course, this will also have certain hardware requirements, such as fingerprint readers, illuminated infrared sensors, and other biometric sensors.

Considering that Microsoft also realizes that most Windows 10 mobile devices are trying to save hardware costs as much as possible, the company may regard Windows Hello as a long-term development strategy.

Devices already equipped with fingerprint readers on the market can enjoy the convenience of Windows Hello after upgrading to Windows 10. As for new features such as iris and facial recognition, Microsoft will require devices to use illuminated infrared sensors (generating a special light-sensing environment) to ensure absolute security and accuracy, in order to prevent the use of photos to replace real people.

Microsoft emphasized that Windows Hello not only brings convenience to users, but its security and reliability can also provide a more practical experience for enterprise applications, data access and online services. In the future network world, users should abandon the practice of saving personal passwords on any device or server, and "not saving passwords" will be the first step to protect personal privacy. In Microsoft's view, passwords that are composed of numbers and letters, complex and easy to be stolen and forgotten, should be replaced by Windows 10 products themselves.

Of course, to achieve all this, Microsoft cannot do without the support of IT professionals, software developers and website creators for Windows Hello. The company has created a programming environment for Windows Hello, code-named Passport, whose main function is to help users log in to websites and applications without using passwords (if the hardware cannot support Windows Hello, the PIN or password input box will automatically pop up).

Windows Hello will store the user's biometric information locally on the device. This data is only used for two purposes: unlocking Windows 10 and providing verification for Passport. When Windows Hello is officially launched, in addition to some applications and websites that will provide support, Microsoft also expects that tens of thousands of corporate Azure Active Directory services will support it.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Windows Hello and Passport are both optional features, which means that users can choose to enable them or continue to use the old password input method. I believe Microsoft also agrees with this point. It is not something that can be achieved overnight to completely replace the traditional verification method of password input with new technology.
