"Halo 1" sold 6.5 million copies, " Halo 2 " sold 8.5 million copies, and " Halo 3 " sold 13 million copies. The studio's " Halo: Reach " sold an astonishing 4 million copies worldwide in the first week of its release. The "Halo" series has also become Bungie's best-selling work.

The breakup of Bungie and Microsoft in 2007 did not mean the end of FPS blockbusters. Although Microsoft still attracted many players with "Halo", Bungie still had the strength to compete. In 2014, the cooperation between Bungie Studio and Activision Blizzard also brought a new FPS game "DESTINY".

On September 9, 2014, "DESTINY" was released on Xbox and PS platforms. With the strong support of Bungie, can "DESTINY" replace "Halo" and become the new generation of sci-fi FPS king?

Looks and feels good

When it was first released, "DESTINY" provided players with a world of intense gunfights and excellent vehicles, and the developer Bungie also created a magnificent cosmic worldview for it. Even if you are already accustomed to the major galaxies in the "Halo" tetralogy, the four main stars of "DESTINY" are enough to make you lost.

As a first-person shooter game, the single protagonist has long been abandoned in the game world of "DESTINY". Hunters, warlocks and Titans serve as guardians, guarding the universe all the time, and players can also choose these three characters with different skills and passive effects to fight.

The game adds a lot of style settings from other popular games in character selection. Face pinching, as a setting that can be used to determine appearance, appears in a first-person FPS shooting game. Will it make many players feel confused? Of course, this is not all. In the game, you may see more familiar scenes.

Although it is a stand-alone game, the full networking setting means that this game must rely on a good network, otherwise it will be disconnected during the game. The full English setting of the game makes the difficulty of the whole game suddenly increase a lot. I wonder how many friends have to make up for that damn English in order to play the game.

I have to say that the developer Bungie has retained many of the design ideas of "Halo" in "DESTINY". If you only look at the CG animation at the beginning of the game and the familiar character settings, will you feel so familiar? Yes, it is very much like Master Chief John in "Halo".

However, even running on last-generation hardware, the entire alien scene in "Destiny" is a master of details. Except for a few repeated corners and gaps, the shape of each rock, village and ruins looks like it was hand-made, and even the rendering of the starry sky can achieve a realistic effect.

In terms of gameplay, DESTINY still uses the mobile tactics gameplay of Halo. With the increase in speed and fluidity, the gunfights in Destiny are more dynamic than its FPS ancestors. In the process of mobile warfare, gliding and short-distance teleportation have been added, and the sense of melee attack is more powerful than that of Halo.

The game follows the basic FPS mode in operation, with simple and rough combat process, complex combat environment and AI characters with different intelligence levels. There are also some AIs with jetpacks, cloaking devices or large-scale shields to assist frontline players.

Moreover, unlike "Halo" which causes fatigue and dizziness after long-term gaming, the combat system of "DESTINY" is very unique. Although the health bar is gradually replaced by shield energy, the enemy's life and death line can still be seen at a glance. For novices, the operation of the game is simpler.

Is DESTINY the dark horse that will dethrone Halo?

Before TGS (Tokyo Game Show) 2014, the release of DESTINY set off a carnival among console players in advance. According to publisher Activision, the game's shipments on the first day exceeded $500 million, breaking the company's new game sales record.

Bungie, a veteran game maker, has brought down the PS exclusive Killzone from the FPS altar with the emergence of Halo. The huge success has also raised players' expectations for DESTINY. Previously, Bungie COO Pete Parsons said in an interview with GamesIndustry that this new sci-fi game is expected to surpass Halo and become the king of the new generation of sci-fi FPS. Can the combination of next-generation consoles and technology create another myth of FPS games?

When it comes to DESTINY, we can't fail to mention Bungie and the Halo series. We all know that the Halo series, which Bungie previously developed for Microsoft consoles, has received rave reviews since the first game. The huge and complex world view, distinctive characters, and highly confrontational battles are all reasons why the Halo series is loved by players.

But looking back at DESTINY, this cross-platform and cross-new and old console work is targeting players who are no longer fans of Master Chief, and the original work also means some new changes.

As an original game across new and old platforms, the game's graphics are not particularly outstanding, but the expressiveness is definitely not bad. The atmosphere created by the entire picture is very good, the desolate earth, abandoned buildings, dark passages, etc., everything combined together appears very natural.

Although DESTINY claims to be a brand new FPS game, players can find shadows of many RPG and MMOFPS games in the game system. The experience level, killing monsters and loot make this game closer to the online game mode, and then the team dungeon and leveling mode are more similar to "Borderlands". Not to mention the predecessor "Halo" series, even compared with the "Call of Duty" series, which is a game that kills all the way, the plot is not an important experience in DESTINY, but more about the thrill of battle and the repeated operation of many daily tasks.

As Bungie's first game after leaving Microsoft, this can be regarded as a bold attempt to bring the MMOFPS game mode into the FPS mode that console players are accustomed to, trying to create a new game type. For players, the graphics and combat experience can be regarded as top-notch, but the game involves multiple game modes, so DESTINY is not outstanding in overall performance.

In general, DESTINY can be said to have opened up a new model for its predecessor "Halo", but compared to "Halo" which has been in the making for more than ten years, DESTINY is still very young. Judging from the quality of Destiney, it can be said that Bungie has achieved its goal, with enough game content, online gaming and combat methods that are not inferior to "Halo", which give this game enough growth potential to further extend the life of the game.

However, no matter whether the game is good or bad, publishing it entirely in English without any Chinese translation still underestimates Chinese players. Even if the game has a high rating, in the eyes of domestic players, any game that is not translated into Chinese is just a hooligan.
