Preface: Apple A9 and HiSilicon 950 are not within the scope of discussion. The former is used by Apple itself, and its performance is obvious to all. The latter is an ARM public version, and it cannot be compared with A9/820/8890 in terms of performance or uniqueness. It just launched the A72 architecture during the window period of Samsung and Qualcomm, which is a relatively successful marketing method. It is good to be the first to launch. In addition, MTK will mainly promote HelioX20 next year. Judging from the performance currently exposed, it should be a mid-to-high-end processor, similar to X10, and there is still a gap from the top flagship mobile chip. Last week, Qualcomm released the latest Snapdragon 820 processor worldwide, and announced that more than 70 manufacturers are currently conducting terminal testing. In view of the fact that MTK took away too much market share in 2015, Qualcomm decided to counterattack in 2016. Let's review the main features of Qualcomm 820 last week. Compared with the previous generation 810 with ARM Cortex-A57/A53 public version IP, the Snapdragon 820 using Samsung's latest generation 14nm FinFET LPP process has six major improvements: 1. The CPU uses 14nm FinFET lpp process and is upgraded to Kryo with quad-core ARMv8 self-compatible architecture, with main frequencies of 2x2.150GHz+2x1.593GHz; supports 1866MHz LPDDR4 memory, and memory controller bandwidth is increased to 28.8GB/s. 2. The GPU is upgraded to Adreno530, with a significant increase in the number of ALUs, full support for OpenCL 2.0 general computing and CPU/GPU unified memory addressing, support for 4K2K resolution 60fps 10bit high-definition video encoding and decoding, performance is improved by 40% compared to the previous generation, and power consumption is reduced by 40%. 3. The DSP is upgraded to Hexagon 680, which has a higher performance/power consumption ratio than some coprocessors using the Cortex-M series. The new Spectra ISP supports up to 28-megapixel cameras, and photo post-processing is even better. 4. The built-in baseband MODEM is upgraded to Qualcomm X12, supporting LTE-Advanced Cat.13 (uplink)/Cat.12 (downlink), with a bandwidth of up to 600Mbps. 5. Ultrasonic fingerprint recognition + QuickCharge 3.0. Qualcomm 820 supports ultrasonic fingerprints, which allows mobile phones to directly realize fingerprint recognition through the screen without adding a fingerprint module separately, and it has higher accuracy and greater tolerance, and can be easily unlocked with wet hands. At the same time, the new fast charging technology has increased efficiency by 38%. Qualcomm claims that it only takes half an hour to provide a day's battery life. 6. Tri-band Wi-Fi, supports the new 802.11ad. The matching set of chips and the built-in Wi-Fi function can support the next-generation 60GHz frequency band standard 802.11ad at most. In actual applications, based on unoptimized browsers, the Snapdragon 820 is second only to the A9 in the Apple iPhone 6s Plus in Web testing. In addition to the A9, the Snapdragon 820 is ahead of any SoC on the market, such as the Exynos 7420. Let's take a look at the product features of Samsung's Exynos 8890. The 14nm FinFET process integrates CPU, GPU, ISP and Cat.12/13 baseband, which is a complete SoC solution. The CPU part is composed of Samsung's own 4-core Mongoose + 4-core A53, which strengthens the multi-core scheduling capability and enhances the multi-tasking/process performance, which can better improve the utilization efficiency of 8 cores. The GPU is even more crazy, Mali-T880 MP12. A 12-core high-frequency graphics core. Think about the Kirin 950, which is also T880, but unfortunately it only has 4 cores. The baseband uses Cat.12 for downlink, with a theoretical rate of 600Mbps, and Cat.13 for uplink, which is the same as Qualcomm 820. Performance comparison: In terms of CPU performance, using GeekBench running data, Qualcomm 820 single-core 2320, multi-core 5369 (prototype). Samsung 8890 single-core 2200, multi-core nearly 6500+. Qualcomm single-core performance is slightly better, Samsung's advantage lies in the more powerful multi-tasking ability, both sides have their own advantages and disadvantages. In terms of GPU, there is no clear data for the comparison between Adreno530 and Mali-T880MP12. The power of Adreno530 has been confirmed by multi-play test software. GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 off-screen score is as high as 48.7fps, even crushing Apple's A9. However, this time Samsung 8890 will not be bad, or even higher. After all, the abnormal parameters of Mali-T880 MP12 are not covered, and it is difficult to think of a difference. In terms of baseband, the two sides have achieved a high degree of consistency in parameters, but as for network support capabilities, Qualcomm's strengths are reflected. Samsung 8890 still does not support telecom networks based on current information. Summary: Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and Samsung Exynos 8890 are both top processors for at least the first three quarters of next year. With real money and real money, the gap between the two sides can be ignored. Market feasibility analysis: From a market perspective, Qualcomm is more versatile. After all, it has always been the first choice for flagship phones of many manufacturers at home and abroad. In addition, 810 has lost too much cheese that should have belonged to Qualcomm. On 820, Qualcomm should have more welfare policies for mobile phone manufacturers. Qualcomm has revealed at the press conference that more than 70 manufacturers are currently testing 820 terminals. Xiaomi, OPPO, LeTV, and even Samsung's S7 (models in some regions) have 820 terminals. Samsung 8890 is expected to be less common. Combined with Samsung's consistent tradition, most of them are used by itself. Of course, there will occasionally be younger brothers like Meizu who will get a share of the pie after half a year. So in theory, 8890 will mainly be used for its own consumption next year. Of course, if it is sold to other manufacturers, it is also a very good choice. Not only will it allow more consumers to understand the power of Samsung's SoC, but it will also enable healthy competition with Qualcomm. The impact at the user level is that product prices will drop to a certain extent, which can be considered a benefit.
