Don’t worry if you lose your phone! Apple Pay explained
After nearly two years of release and various twists and turns, Apple's Apple Pay mobile payment service finally came to mainland China on February 18, 2016. For Chinese users, mobile payment is actually not a strange thing. Grabbing red envelopes and Alipay have already completed user enlightenment. But the difference between these two is that Apple Pay is just a payment service built by Apple. It links banks, stores and users, but it does not keep money in its own place like Alipay. When Apple Pay was officially launched, Sina Technology sorted out all the details about it and answered them one by one, hoping that more people will understand it. Part 1: What devices can use Apple Pay in the preparation stage? Apple has made dual restrictions on devices and systems. Both must meet the requirements before Apple Pay can be used. The device requirements, in short, require iPhone 6 or later mobile phones, iPad Air 2 and mini 3 later tablets, and Apple Watch. Specific models: iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus; iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Pro; and Apple Watch. If you want to experience Apple Pay perfectly, it is best not to have an old phone. In a special case, if you are still using an old model like iPhone 5, because it does not have NFC function, you can use Apple Pay on the watch with an Apple Watch. Older models than iPhone 5 will not work, they cannot be paired with Apple Watch. Are there any requirements for the iOS system? The iPhone or iPad must be upgraded to at least iOS 9.2, and the watch must be at least watch OS 2.1. How to bind the card? Unlike Alipay, which can keep the money, Apple Pay only turns a bunch of physical credit cards into virtual cards and stores them in the phone, which is also the biggest difference between the two. In the system's built-in "Wallet" application, then click the ⊕ symbol in the upper right corner to enter the card binding program. Use the camera to take a picture of the card to identify it. If the card is worn and cannot be recognized, you can enter it manually or bind it through iTunes. After that, the bank will send a text message confirmation code, and the operation steps are basically the next step. Already bound cards will appear in the Wallet app . BTW: In the early morning of the 18th, Apple has begun to promote the Apple Pay service option (not the iOS system upgrade), but because there are so many iPhones in China, users may receive it in batches, so don't worry. Can my bank card support Apple Pay? When it was launched today, the first batch of 12 banks already supported Apple Pay, they are: Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, Bank of Shanghai, China Construction Bank, China CITIC Bank, China Merchants Bank, Minsheng Bank, China Guangfa Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Industrial Bank, China Postal Savings Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. At present, we have tried debit cards and credit cards of supported banks. There will be 7 more later: Ping An Bank, Everbright Bank, Bank of Guangzhou, Huaxia Bank, Ningbo Bank, Bank of Communications, Bank of Beijing. However, in addition to the above, single-currency cards with visa or master marks cannot be bound to Apple Pay at present. There are more banks supporting Apple Pay in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, and the detailed list can be found on Apple's official website . Can other people's cards be bound to my Apple Pay at the 19 banks supported by Apple Pay in China ? Yes. As long as you have the verification code and can receive the verification SMS from the bank. Part 2 Where can Apple Pay be used? Which stores accept Apple Pay? Can it be used on public transportation? In mainland China, offline stores such as KFC , McDonald's , and 7-11 convenience stores currently accept Apple Pay for checkout, and Apple said that more will be added in the future; public transportation cannot be used because the settlement system of the card and UnionPay are two different things. Because Apple Pay is compatible with UnionPay QuickPass, it can be used in almost any place where QuickPass is seen. Apple Pay is implemented through UnionPay QuickPass, so the logos are usually put together . Using Apple Pay to buy coffee , the offline stores that have been supported as of today are: Apple Store retail stores, OK convenience stores, Burger King, Pacific Coffee, Lane Crawford, 7-11 (Beijing), KFC (Beijing), McDonald's, Carrefour, Haode Convenience Store, Wuyuan Supermarket, Mannings Supermarket, Shin Kong Place (Suzhou), Five Star Appliances, Nonggongshang Supermarket (Shanghai), City Shop City Supermarket. In the future, FamilyMart, Coca-Cola (Shanghai), Costa (South China), Joy City (Shanghai), Godiva Chocolate, etc. will also support it. Apple's ambition is not only offline stores, but also e-commerce, so Apple Pay also supports in-app payment. What does in-app payment mean? In-store payment is relatively easy to understand. In the past, you swiped a card to buy instant noodles in 711, but now you can just swipe your phone or watch. As for in-app payment, in the past, when you bought movie tickets at Maoyan Cinema, you had to jump to Alipay to check out. Now, clicking "Pay" in the app will pop up Apple Pay. Compared with Alipay, it does not need to jump to other apps, and the experience is smoother. iPad only supports in-app payment. I guess Apple also understands that it would be silly to take out an iPad to check out at 711 (/TДT)/ Currently supported devices and payment scenarios for Apple Pay Currently, the following apps can support Apple Pay after updating: Vipshop, Dangdang, Benlai, Jumei, Meituan, Dianping, Enjoy, Ctrip, Qunar, Air China, Shenzhou Car Rental, Yidao, Meituan Waimai, Maoyan Movie, Weipiaoer, etc. Other apps that have been confirmed to support Apple Pay include: JD.com, NetEase Kaola, Weibo Pay. This morning, a large number of apps were updated to support Apple Pay. Part 3: Apple Pay in Action How is the actual experience of Apple Pay? Apple describes it as "You no longer have to search for your wallet or waste time looking for the right card." Before, when we used Alipay to pay, we needed to at least: light up the phone - unlock it - enter the app - click on the payment - enter the password (or fingerprint) - confirm the payment. Apple Pay will simplify it a lot: just touch the phone to the card reader - enter the password (or fingerprint). Apple Pay can also be used when the phone has no network. Most users will not (nor need to) delve into its principles, but simply and crudely measure it by convenience. In this regard, Apple Pay is qualified. As for its shortcomings, compared with Alipay and the like, Apple Pay has a hardware threshold. At least you need an iPhone, and it cannot be too old. Android phones cannot use Apple Pay, no matter how advanced they are... Our most profound experience in Pacific Coffee, KFC and Apple stores is that the speed is very fast. In an environment that supports Apple Pay, the phone is basically placed next to the card machine and the payment is completed in 2-3 seconds. This reminds me of the scene of using Apple Watch to open the door of a hotel last year. It was very novel and exciting for the first time, but after getting used to it, I basically didn't need to bring the room card. When this novelty is integrated into life, the sense of ritual of the first use will disappear. This is probably the long-term vision of Apple Pay that Cook mentioned before. Can Apple Watch use Apple Pay without a mobile phone? Yes. Apple Watch is completely independent when making payments, and mobile payments can be made even if it is not connected to the iPhone. If you bind a credit card to your iPhone in advance, you can realize the legendary "swipe watch payment". Pay with watch Double-click the side button of the watch, select the credit or debit card to use, and then point the watch face at the payment terminal. The Apple Watch will vibrate slightly, and the verification mark will appear on the screen, indicating that the payment is successful. I have actually been looking forward to this application scenario: I only wear Apple Watch when I go out for a run, it can connect to Bluetooth headphones to play music, and I can buy a bottle of water by swiping the watch when I am thirsty halfway. Now it has finally come true. Does Apple Pay require a password? This is divided into N situations. 1. Debit cards over 300 yuan need to swipe the phone and then enter the password; 2. Credit cards, it depends on the user. Many domestic users like to add a password to their credit cards without signing, so Apple Pay also requires a password; 3. It is related to UnionPay QuickPass service (QuickPass), the limit without signature or password is 300 yuan; 4. It is related to the merchant. Some merchants will ask for passwords and signatures even if the limit is not 300 yuan. Will mobile phone cases affect Apple Pay? It is effective if the phone or watch is within 2-3 cm of the card reader. Conventional plastic or leather phone cases will not affect it, but there are thousands of strange phone cases on Taobao. As long as there is no metal part blocking the area around the iPhone camera to affect NFC. As long as this part is not blocked, it will be fine . Apple's own phone cases are fine, including the Smart Battery Case. Although its appearance is often complained, it does not affect the NFC antenna. Will Apple Pay have points or something like that? Apple has turned the credit card into an electronic version and put it in the phone. The original credit card discounts and points will not disappear. A certain restaurant used to pay half price on Wednesdays with a CMB card. Now, if you use Apple Pay to pay with a CMB card, you will also get a discount and points. Is there a handling fee for users? No, Apple does not charge. If there is, the credit card issuing bank will charge an annual fee. Can Apple Pay in China be used in other countries? The cards of the 19 banks can be bound to Apple Pay, but whether it can be used after going abroad depends on the foreign merchants. Their payment devices must support UnionPay and the stores must also support Apple Pay. Part 4: Security Is Apple Pay safe? There is no 100% security in the world. We can only say that Apple has taken security measures for the current problems that can be thought of. Card information is not stored in the iPhone. Instead, a variable token code is used. The dynamic security code sent to the bank is different every time you buy something. The key to all this is the Touch ID fingerprint device on the phone, which has been verified by several generations of iPhones. Apple also emphasizes user privacy: it does not record any transactions generated through Apple Pay, nor does it analyze user purchase behavior. And it specifically mentioned: "This is the biggest difference between Apple and other competitors." Apple Pay technical process Will the phone or watch be stolen if it is lost? When Apple Pay is bound to a credit card, fingerprint recognition must be enabled. If your iPhone or iPad is lost, it must be protected with Touch ID first. Users can also remotely set it to "Lost Mode" through the " Find My iPhone " app or iCloud.com website , and Apple Pay will stop. You must first activate the lock password to use the Apple Pay page on the watch. If the Apple Watch is lost, you can log in to iCloud or cancel the Apple Watch payment authorization on the iPhone. As long as the virtual bank card number is deauthorized, the payment function will be terminated even if the Apple Watch is offline. How is Apple Pay different from other manufacturers' payment services? The integration of hardware and software + hardware encryption + sensors + payment services is currently only possible with Apple. This is another commonplace problem of hardware and software integration. Although its rival Google also has Google Pay and the like, the different hardware and systems of various manufacturers (currently there are still many Android phones with kernels of version 4.x) have led to slow progress. Another point is also reflected in the appeal. Any company can customize its own standards, but only those with more users have the opportunity to become industry standards. Other manufacturers are trying other ways to differentiate their competition. It is said that Samsung's Samsung Pay supports magnetic signal security transmission technology (MST). Merchants do not need to upgrade cash registers, and the user experience is similar to that of magnetic cards. We will wait until Samsung Pay goes online before comparing it with Apple. Part 5 Other Questions What preferential promotion measures does Apple or stores have? Apple officials did not emphasize this point, but just said that Apple Pay will also have the same credit card discounts as the domestic cooperative banks. For Apple, this is actually a tricky way. It does not need to plan discount activities by itself, and the banks will assist. How does Apple compete with the money-burning promotion of Alipay and WeChat? Because of the existence of these two local tycoons in China, many people are not optimistic about Apple Pay. When I interviewed Phil Schiller at the beginning of the year, I asked this question . He did not comment on services such as Alipay, but just replied: "Apple has always only focused on what it is doing and will not consider too much about the actions of others." Faced with the money-burning promotion and local promotion teams of Alipay and WeChat, Apple may not be able to lower its posture to do similar things. You can't imagine Captain Cook calling on Chinese aunts to take their iPhones to the supermarket to grab discounted rice, but Jack Ma can. Many people believe that users who are already accustomed to scanning codes with Alipay will not migrate so easily. Even if Apple is strong and the payment experience is good, Apple Pay will not be an explosive growth. It needs a period of cultivation. On the bright side, Apple sold 74.779 million iPhones in the most recent fiscal quarter , and future new devices will certainly support Apple Pay, so it has a lot of room for growth, and UnionPay also needs a strong partner to contain Alipay and WeChat.
