With the rise of mobile computing, traditional PC giants such as Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD are actively embracing the mobile Internet. The boundaries between mobile phones, laptops, and desktops are becoming increasingly blurred, and some cross-platform testing tools have emerged, providing a reference for performance experience comparisons between multiple platforms. Recently, the famous foreign PRIMATE LABS released a new Geekbench 4 testing tool. In addition to supporting cross-platform comparisons as always, it has added more dimensional indicators to evaluate the performance of CPUs and GPUs, such as adjusting the respective proportions of integers, floating-point numbers, and memory, and adding GPU tests (Compute), making multi-platform comparisons more balanced. Geekbench 4 uses the performance of Intel Core i7-6600U as the benchmark score - 4000 points. Naturally, scores above 4000 have better performance, while scores below 4000 points gradually reduce the experience. The previous generation Geekbench 3 was based on the Intel Core i5-2520M as the benchmark score - 2500 points. We can see that with the rapid development of processor performance, the baseline has also been raised. Based on this, we gathered the mainstream mobile phones, notebooks, and desktops on the market for a comprehensive performance comparison. Geekbench 4 PC version and Android provide CPU single-core and multi-core performance, GPU general computing performance test items, while the iOS version currently only provides CPU single-core and multi-core performance test items. CPU single-thread and multi-thread performance comparison First is the comparison of processor performance. PC (desktop notebook) selected Core i7-6800K (six cores and twelve threads), Core i7-6700K (quad-core eight threads), Core i5-6500 (quad-core four threads), Core i3-6100 (dual-core four threads) and Core i7-6700HQ (quad-core eight threads), Core i5-6200U (dual-core four threads), of which Core i7-6700HQ and Core i5-6200U are for the notebook market. The top desktop platform Core i7-6800K GeForce GTX 1080. The iOS platform uses the A9X of iPad Pro, the A9 of iPhone 6s, the A8X of iPad Air 2 and the A8 of iPhone 6. The A8X of iPad Air 2 uses a triple-core design, while the others are dual-core designs. The Android platform uses Samsung Exynos 8890, Exynos 7420, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, Snapdragon 810, MediaTek helio X25, which are all mainstream mid-to-high-end mobile phone chips. There is no doubt that PC processors are ahead of mobile processors in terms of CPU single-thread and multi-thread performance, and desktop processors are generally higher than laptop processors. However, if you look closely at Apple's A9X processor, it is already fully capable of competing with mid- and low-end mobile processors. Both single-core and multi-core performance are close to the Core i5-6200U processor. After all, the TDP of the Core i5-6200U processor is as high as 15W. If we talk about energy efficiency, the Core i5-6200U processor may lose miserably. As mobile processors, Apple and Android camps have their own wins and losses, but Apple's advantage is still very obvious, especially the A9X chip, whose single-core performance is far beyond the reach of its competitors. It should be noted that the demand for multi-tasking on the mobile side is weak, and the performance of the mobile phone depends largely on the single-core performance of the processor. In addition to the advantages of the iOS system, this is also the reason why the smooth experience of the Apple system has always been better than that of Android. Let's take a look at the three musketeers in the Android camp: Samsung, Qualcomm, and MediaTek. Overall, MediaTek is slightly inferior in both single-core and multi-core performance, and the comparison between Qualcomm Snapdragon and Samsung Orion is a mixed bag. Samsung Exynos 8890 is undoubtedly the king of the Android camp, but Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is not far behind, following closely behind. GPU general computing performance comparison General computing performance, Geekbench 4 mainly considers the Compute computing performance of the chip graphics processing unit. For mobile phone chips, the GPU and CPU units are integrated on a die, and mid-to-high-end notebooks and desktop platforms are usually equipped with independent graphics cards, and these graphics cards unscrupulously increase power consumption from the power supply, which is naturally unmatched by mobile phone chips. General computing performance comparison As can be seen from the above figure, excluding iOS system because Geekbench 4 does not provide general computing test items, PC general computing completely crushes mobile chips, and even iOS system is difficult to compete. General computing The most powerful GeForce GTX 1080 on the desktop is 23.91 times that of the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 on the mobile phone. Even the iGPU of Core i5-6200U is almost twice the performance of Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. In the case of a huge difference in power consumption, it will be difficult for mobile phone chips to compete with desktop discrete graphics cards in general computing performance. After all, the processes and architectures of both are being promoted simultaneously. In general computing, the Android camp's Samsung Orion unexpectedly lost to Qualcomm Snapdragon in all aspects, and the difference was huge, even weaker than MediaTek Helio X25. We speculate that the Samsung Orion's general computing performance is surprising because it is not good enough for Geekbench 4. In addition, the benchmark software tests the extreme peak performance of the processor. In daily use, the processor cannot always maintain the peak value, and the temperature, which has a great impact on the user experience, cannot be reflected in the benchmark software. Summary The performance battle test of mobile phones/notebooks/desktops has come to an end. Due to time constraints, this test only brings together typical products currently on the market. In addition, the heat dissipation of mobile phone chips from different manufacturers is different, and the performance itself also has certain differences, so the above test results are only for typical reference. Image from the Internet Overall, the distribution of processor performance and general computing performance is basically as expected, but the rapid progress of mobile processors in recent years has made PC products no longer alone in the fight for victory, especially Apple's A9X chip, which only uses a few watts of power consumption to compete with mid- and low-end notebook processors. Apart from performance, the energy efficiency ratio will undoubtedly make PC products ashamed. In terms of general computing performance, the current absolute dominance of PC graphics cards has not been invaded in any way. After all, PC graphics cards can have almost unlimited power consumption and heat dissipation, allowing them to stack a large number of transistors, and their performance naturally crushes mobile phone chips. However, mobile phone chips are restricted by battery life and heat dissipation, and they are completely unable to compete with PC graphics cards.
