Will the increasingly popular curved screen be the future of mobile phone screens?
Curved screen, a technology that was once not optimistic but is now hot, has attracted more and more attention from ordinary consumers with the hot sales of models such as Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Xiaomi Note 2, Huawei Mate9 Pro, and vivo Xplay6. Admittedly, the curved screen gives mobile phones more beauty and possibilities, and it allows us to see the form of mobile phone screens other than straight screens; but the fact that it has no other function besides "face" has become one of the important reasons for its criticism. So, can the curved screen become the future of mobile phone screens? ● The past and present of the curved screen At this year's MWC World Mobile Communications Conference, Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge has become the focus of almost everyone's attention with its stunning hyperbolic design. The more perfect curvature and double-sided glass body design perfectly reflect the advantages of the hyperbolic screen. The Galaxy S7 edge, which combines many advantages such as high appearance/high configuration/waterproof/photography, has undoubtedly become Samsung's most popular mobile phone product in recent years. However, many people don’t know that more than three years ago, when Samsung presented the first generation of curved screen mobile phone Galaxy Round to us, it not only failed to gain market recognition, but even received few applause. Even LG, which followed Samsung to join the curved screen camp, withdrew from the curved screen mobile phone market after launching two generations of LG G Flex due to poor market response. Now when we look back at these two mobile phones, although their bulky and slightly funny appearance is indeed not very pleasing, it is precisely with these products as the foundation that today’s curved screen mobile phones can be created.
Samsung Galaxy Round
LG G Flex In the following years, Samsung began to launch the edge version of the Galaxy Note/S series, but the initial single-curved design still did not receive market recognition. It was not until the release of the double-sided glass, dual-curved design Galaxy S6 edge that the curved screen design gradually began to be recognized by the public. This year's Samsung S7 edge and Note 7 (delisted) gradually pushed the curved design to the mainstream. After the release of S7 edge, more and more mobile phone manufacturers began to join the camp of dual-curved mobile phones. ● Supporters: Appearance is king For the fans of dual-curved screens, the dual-curved screen is undoubtedly the future form of mobile phones they hope to see. Indeed, with the continuous maturity of the smartphone industry, hardware, software and even popular functions such as photography are no longer the best way to differentiate products. Under such a background, the "curved screen design" is undoubtedly the best choice for mobile phones to seek differentiation. Although the use of curved screens is enough to design more outstanding products, it is also a test of the design capabilities of mobile phone manufacturers. Take Samsung for example. It took several generations of products to launch a satisfactory curved product. This accumulation process is something that many manufacturers do not have. In the future, the accumulation of this technology and craftsmanship may further widen the gap between manufacturers. In this context, "appearance is king" can still be explained, but what is reflected behind it is the technical strength of the entire mobile phone manufacturer, which may also become an important reference for many consumers when they want to buy mobile phones. Not only that, as a type of OLED, the curved screen has also promoted the development of OLED screens. Although the OLED screen represented by Samsung AMOLED has demonstrated its value, it has not yet fermented to the extent of replacing traditional LCD screens. In this context, OLED displays with more forms have undoubtedly become the best weapon to overwhelm LCD displays. ● Opponents: Practicality is still the biggest barrier to the popularization of curved screens For pragmatists, the "vase-like" OLED may still be far from the "future mobile phone" they imagine. The reasons are nothing more than the following: there is still no function that can carry the "weight", the fragility problem cannot be solved, and the "variables" from the future are still unpredictable. Judging from the current application situation, brands such as Samsung and vivo that currently use Samsung AMOLED curved screens, and Xiaomi that uses LG OLED curved screens, do not seem to have found a more suitable application scenario for curved screens. Although Samsung and vivo have already adopted "side drawers" on their own curved models, it is still difficult to conquer most users with this level of software optimization. As for the fragility we mentioned, I believe that many users have already felt the same. In non-special circumstances (special circumstances refer to technologies such as MOTO X's extreme extreme technology that sacrifice part of the user experience to obtain better screen toughness), the higher the screen-to-body ratio of the mobile phone, the greater the risk of broken screens; and the characteristics of the hyperbolic screen increase its risk of broken screens. For pragmatists, it is obviously not a wise choice to increase the risk of use without practical use. Not only that, the fundamental reason why the display panel of the TV used a curved OLED display before was that the inward curved design was more in line with the visual effect of the human eyeball. As for the curved screen on the current mobile phone, it not only does not have this advantage, but also brings some "negative" effects. ● Challenges from "future variables" Compared to the above three problems that can still be solved, "the future" seems to be the most unpredictable and the biggest challenger for curved screens. In just three years, curved screens have completed the development from trial to large-scale application. From the current situation, it may take more than three years for ordinary OLED screens to be officially popularized. In this case, it is a bit too hasty to say that curved screens will be the future of mobile phone screens. As far as the current situation is concerned, full-screen mobile phones represented by Xiaomi MIX, borderless mobile phones like Nubia Z11, and even foldable screen mobile phones that are still far from the edge, may become strong rivals of curved screens in the future. If we were to draw a conclusion on this issue now, perhaps no one would be able to give the right answer. ● Conclusion: The value of curved screens is worth affirming But no matter what, after several years of development, curved screens still let us see their important value. Curved screens may one day become a thing of the past in the history of mobile phone development, but for our generation, its innovative value to the entire mobile phone industry and its stunning achievement in history will still remain in the hearts of our generation, just like Nokia back then, and will never go away.
