PC prices are also rising: manufacturers want profits due to component shortages

The decline of the traditional PC industry has not changed, but now there is worse news, that is, the price of computers will become higher and higher. Lenovo, the world's largest PC manufacturer, recently said by its president and chief operating officer Gianfranco Lanci that it expects computer prices to continue to rise in the next few quarters, mainly due to the shortage of component supply.

The Lenovo executive said that the supply of components such as storage, batteries, and display devices is limited, especially DRAM, which is in short supply and has a high price. This will lead to an increase in PC prices. In the short term, PCs of all shapes and sizes will increase in price, including desktops, laptops, and 2-in-1 devices.

Of course, there is another equally critical reason for the increase in PC prices, which is that buyers are buying fewer PCs. The entire PC industry has been experiencing a decline in sales over the past few years, and the trend will not change in the next few quarters. Due to weak demand, manufacturers have to increase PC prices in order to maintain their profit margins.

According to a recent IDC report, global PC sales fell 1.5% year-on-year to 70.2 million units in the fourth quarter of 2016. Gartner analysts believe that as global PC shipments continue to decline, manufacturers will focus on high-end and high-priced PCs to gain higher profits, but cheap PCs will not disappear, but PC manufacturers do not think they are very attractive.

It's unclear what the average price increase will be for each PC model, or how long the increase will last, but computer prices began to rise gradually in the spring of 2017.
