Previous news said that one of the iPhone models updated in 2017 will use a glass substrate. This substrate can be ceramic, sapphire, liquid metal glass, zirconium oxide or other similar materials. Recently, Apple mentioned the "transparent display cover structure," "sapphire coating facilities" and "laser polishing system" in ceramic iPhones in different patents. The US Patent and Trademark Office recently disclosed a patent obtained by Apple. This new patent is related to sapphire, specifically laser coloring sapphire materials and methods of coloring sapphire materials using lasers. This new laser system brings a new coloring method to glass iPhones. Manufacturers can use this method to color the entire device, or part of it. It is reported that using this coloring method can avoid the problem of discoloration like the bright black iPhone 7. The laser coloring method is as follows: The sapphire material is placed on an opaque substrate material, generally a metal or alloy, and then the laser is irradiated onto the metal through the sapphire, and the part of the sapphire material exposed to the laser will produce a chemical reaction. This part of the chemical reaction will have a visible color change. This chemical reaction is actually an exchange of ions and/or atoms between the opaque substrate material and the sapphire material, and/or the embedding of ions and/or atoms of the opaque substrate into the crystal lattice of the sapphire material. This change will remain permanently in the sapphire material and will not disappear easily. Moreover, the visible color changes the operating parameters and/or characteristics of the laser beam and/or the composition of the opaque substrate material. Therefore, the sapphire material can have different and distinctive visible color parts, and even multiple color blocks on the same sapphire material. Apple has already applied for this patent in the third quarter of 2015. I wonder if they will apply this technology to their products?
