Mobile phone screens also have HDR. Is it a gimmick like 4K or is it the real deal?
The word HDR is familiar to everyone. This technology, which is widely used in the field of photography, now appears on almost every mobile phone and camera. After turning on the HDR function, the photos taken can have better tolerance. But have you heard that there is also an HDR function on TV? Maybe you have heard of it if you usually care about this kind of technology, but now mobile phones also support HDR display, you may not know it! The recently released Sony Xperia XZ Premium and LG G6 have a selling point that no one has noticed: support for HDR 10 technology. HDR (High-Dynamic Range) is translated as "high dynamic range display technology", which can fully preserve or display the highlights and dark details of the picture, without a dead black or overexposure. The specific display effect can be seen from the comparison in the figure below. This technology is the recording process of HDR in photography and videography, and the playback process of HDR on the screen. The emergence of HDR reminds us of the Bravia Engine that Sony used extensively on Xperia phones. This display technology can effectively enhance the color performance of the screen, but because it can only enhance the effects of photos and videos, many people think that this function is very useless. The same technology also has 4K. Xperia Z5 Premium has been criticized for only being able to enable 4K in photos and videos for a long time. Although Sony later opened up global 4K, it still did not satisfy users. HDR is a technology that has been widely used in the field of television. Is there any difference between it and the previous technology when it is transferred to mobile phones this time? Unfortunately, there is no difference. It is not that the mobile phone can get a very big improvement after supporting HDR technology. If you want to get HDR display effects, you must have video and photo files that reach HDR level, and such files are now very rare. Just like there is no advantage without a 4K screen and 4K video, the videos we usually browse the web, system interface and HDR technology have nothing to do with it! So in the end, is HDR still a gimmick?
It is not that there are fewer HDR resources. Mobile phones that support HDR have at least one advantage that other mobile phones cannot match: the screen quality will definitely be higher. Mobile phone manufacturers have not given relevant standards, but we can get a glimpse of the hardware requirements of HDR TVs. The maximum brightness of general TVs is 500nit, while HDR TV models can reach more than 1000nit, and the minimum brightness is also required to be reduced to 0.05nit; the contrast ratio is required to be at least 20000:1, while ordinary TVs generally only have 2000:1; not to mention that HDR also has requirements for color gamut. The HDR technology used on mobile phones is HDR 10, which supports 10-bit color depth, which also means that the mobile phone screen must be able to display 10-bit color depth. In other words, if your mobile phone screen is not in place, then adding HDR technology is useless. Therefore, the significance of HDR is still greater than 4K. The gap between 2K screens and 4K screens is not very large, because it has exceeded the limit of human eye recognition. However, the screen that supports HDR technology can actually provide better display effects. Although the HDR function is turned on when playing HDR files, the better screen used to support HDR can always play its advantages. Just like a car that supports the Ludicrous mode, although it drives like other cars when the Ludicrous mode is not turned on, the transmission, steering, shock absorption and other configurations of this car need to be upgraded to meet the operating requirements of the Ludicrous mode, so the driving experience will be better at ordinary times. After saying so much, everyone knows what the HDR technology means for mobile phones, right? In fact, there are many technologies similar to HDR, such as the "father" of HDR 10 - Dolby Vision. LG G6 supports Dolby Vision, so it automatically meets the HDR standard, because Dolby Vision technology is based on the original HDR technology and has been improved in many aspects, giving it a wider color gamut and higher dynamic range. HDR is a subset of Dolby Vision. If the HDR on the phone is called HDR 10, then Dolby Vision is HDR 12, because in terms of color depth, the former only supports 10 bits, while the latter supports 12 bits. In addition, Sony has technologies such as X-Reality for Mobile and Triluminos Display for Mobile. Like Bravia Engine, they also use the technology used on Bravia TVs on Xperia phones. The conditions of use are similar to Bravia Engine, which is turned on under specific conditions. However, Triluminos technology also has higher requirements for the adjustment of screen backlight, so in order to meet the Triluminos standard, manufacturers also use better screen panels, which is similar to HDR. So although HDR technology is like a gimmick like the previous 4K, they can really give users a better screen. 4K mobile phones have an extra 4K screen (although it is useless, it is the crystallization of human technology after all), and HDR technology brings a better screen in terms of color gamut, contrast and other indicators. So if you have high requirements for mobile phone display, then buying a mobile phone with support for HDR and Dolby Vision as the standard may be a good choice. However, the premise is that manufacturers do prepare a better screen for HDR like TV manufacturers. If manufacturers cut corners and only add software-level support for HDR technology, then this technology is meaningless. So, do you think the display effects of these HDR-supported mobile phones will be better?
