Most people think that the TouchID sensor on iPhones and iPads is very secure, and it is. However, a new study conducted by New York University and Michigan State University has found a way to "fool" fingerprint sensors on smartphones. The researchers were able to digitally create fake fingerprints that are made up of common features of human fingerprints, which are called "MasterPrints" . The fake fingerprints were developed by computer simulations and were able to match the sensors of commercially available smartphones with a success rate of up to 65%. This was of course done in computer simulations, and the research was not tested on real phones. Security experts point out that the success rate of digitally created fake fingerprints in the real world is much lower than the 65% in the simulated world. A doctor said that their findings show that if you can somehow create a magic glove with MasterPrints on each finger, you can try it on the iPhone before the phone asks for a numeric password, and the iPhone's fingerprint sensor is likely to be cracked. When Apple was asked about the research, the company pointed out that the chance of an iPhone being attacked by a fake fingerprint match is one in 50,000. Apple said it has incorporated security features to prevent false matches on the iPhone's TouchID sensor.
