What is the difference between Baidu and Google?

Recently, Baidu CEO Robin Li personally answered this question in a conversation. He even divided the difference between Baidu and Google into two stages: the PC stage and the mobile Internet stage.

In the PC stage, Baidu "mainly focused on UGC, User Generated Content, which means user-generated content". What Robin Li said about user-generated content means that Baidu does not passively index existing content on the Internet, but creates content for Chinese users and Chinese Internet users. For example, Baidu Tieba, Baidu Knows, Baidu Encyclopedia, etc. all have this concept.

"We allow users to create portals, create content, and then search through search engine technology." This is the biggest difference between Baidu Search and Google in the PC era.

In the era of mobile Internet, Google has focused more on the Android ecosystem: how to make Android create more apps, or how to create industries that they think may become big in 20 years, such as driverless cars or health hardware.

Baidu "not only connects information, but also connects services. For example, if you open Baidu and type in the word cinema, it will tell you which cinema is 1.1 kilometers away, what movie is playing at what time, and which seats are available for purchase. You can choose your seat and pay. A series of actions can be completed in Baidu."

"Baidu is trying to keep users on Baidu and direct traffic to its other products, such as Zhidao, Baike, Tieba, etc., while Google is trying to make users quickly find what they want and leave."

In the PC stage, this is the biggest difference between the two search giants.

"Some people compare Alibaba to Amazon, but in fact, the two are quite different. It is like a fancy version of Craigslist (a classified information website in the United States), and it is also eBay, PayPal, Netflix, Groupon..."

When Alibaba went public, the American media introduced Alibaba to the public who were not familiar with it, but this introduction must have made them more confused. In the mobile Internet stage mentioned by Robin Li, Baidu, like Alibaba, is expanding into more areas besides search.

In fact, whether it is the PC stage or the mobile Internet stage, China's Internet giants are like an all-encompassing behemoth, using their own traffic and scale advantages to squeeze every inch of potential profit-generating area.

What about the Internet giants in the United States? Perhaps they cannot represent all of them, but as Robin Li said, Google is working on industries that they believe will become big in 20 years, such as driverless cars, health hardware, and space...

Peter Thiel, the "godfather" of Silicon Valley entrepreneurship, has always been pessimistic about China's technology entrepreneurship. He divides the models of China and the United States into "from 1 to N" and "from 0 to 1": the former is to copy a certain feasible model for promotion and large-scale use, while the latter is to create something new.

In 1453, the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople and became the overlord of southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean. Next, the Ottoman Empire launched a "jungle war" in Europe and North Africa and entered a long period of government expansion.

As a result, a number of Western European countries suffered, because the Ottoman Empire controlled the ocean routes of the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Indian Ocean, and the Ottoman Empire, which believed in Islam, "did not do business with infidels." Helpless, Europeans, guided by the belief that "the earth is round," set out westward and ushered in the Age of Discovery.

Everyone knows what happened next.

"This is the difference between land civilization and ocean civilization," concluded Mr. Luo, who lives in Xicheng District.
