This realization changed Jobs' life

In 1982, Steve Jobs, then 26, gave a speech while accepting the Gold Plate Award from the Academy of Achievement in Washington, DC.

This gave Jobs an opportunity to teach high-achieving young people how to make their lives and the world a better place.

He explained his most precise creative theory to the young people.

He also details a realization that changed his life: "One of the things I remember growing up is: I don't know how it works, but the world is what it is, and you never try to change it. You just try to find your place in it and have the best life. The world is going to keep on going, and there are some pretty smart people guiding it."

He continued: “When you start talking to some of these people, you realize they’re not that different from you.”

In other words, the people who lead the world's politics, economy, and culture are just ordinary people like you and me.

Therefore, you also have the potential to change the world.

"These are the people who make the decisions every day that shape the course of the world," Jobs said. "They are not that different from you. They may have extraordinary talents in certain areas, but at the core, they are just like the rest of us."

With the right connections, the right training, and the right mindset, you too can become one of them.

For Jobs, this realization made him realize his responsibility to the world. If you have the power to improve the happiness of society as a whole, then you have a responsibility to do so. As philosophers have said for centuries, this is what it means to live a meaningful life.
