Nintendo's next-generation console will use Android system

Nintendo's next-generation console will use Android system

June 1st news, we still know very little about Nintendo's NX console. The only credible thing is that the company, which has always been low-key, has announced that the console is not a replacement for Wii U or 3DS and will be launched in 2016.

Nintendo hasn't even clarified whether the NX will be a home console, a handheld game console, or something in between. However, according to the Nikkei, the old video game store will make a major change - adopting the Android system on the NX.

According to Nikkei, which cited people familiar with the matter, the NX's operating system will "adopt Android" in order to "speed up game developers' familiarity with the system." This is obviously still a rumor at this point, but Nikkei has a good track record of predicting Nintendo's future moves. For example, the publication showed the world the existence of the 3DS XL before Nintendo officially announced it, and recently accurately predicted the company's plans for smartphone gaming.

If the rumors are true, then this is indeed a radical move by Nintendo. The company's previous console products all use proprietary systems, and the development environment and user experience are quite unique. Once the Android system is adopted, players will be able to play more games because the number of game works will obviously increase significantly.

As we all know, Nintendo's third-party developer camp is not strong enough, especially on the N64. The Wii U is now supported by first-party games, such as "Mario Kart 8" and "Splatoon", but there are few blockbusters. Android is currently used by thousands of developers around the world, and the shared kernel will make the porting process particularly convenient. Of course, don't expect to see a similar system on the NX as on smartphones. The Android system can be highly customized, and Nintendo will inevitably add its own top-level interface.

So what will the Nintendo NX look like? Will it be a smartphone, a tablet, or something else unexpected? Nintendo calls it "a whole new concept," and the company recently announced it will be working with mobile giant DeNA to develop smartphone games, and the company has also confirmed that the NX is not a successor to its current console platform.

Nintendo declined to comment on the rumors.
