Ten days after the Stagefright vulnerability was revealed, which claimed to be able to attack hundreds of millions of Android users with just a text message, Android manufacturers seem to have become more reliable.

Google announced today that starting this week, Nexus phones and tablets will receive monthly security updates, and the Stagefright vulnerability will be eliminated first. Android's fragmentation problem makes it impossible for Google to update its devices uniformly like Apple does. What Google can guarantee is that almost all Nexus devices (Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and Nexus Player) are covered.

Security updates are independent of Android system updates. Google said that within three years of the launch of a Nexus device or a device purchased from the Google Store, security updates will continue to be available within a year and a half.

For other Android phone manufacturers, Google will open source these security updates. It seems that Google still takes this very seriously. Adrian Ludwig, head of the Android security department, said: "Now, in terms of system security, Android phone manufacturers and the entire ecosystem are very clear about how to respond quickly and effectively."

As an Android manufacturer giant, Samsung also issued a similar statement today, even slightly earlier than Google, saying that it would release security updates on a monthly basis to respond quickly to security threats to the Galaxy series of phones. Unfortunately, other Samsung models are not included in the plan.

Rick Segal, Samsung's vice president, said that they had been working on today's decision as early as six months ago. In addition, their quick solution to the mobile keyboard vulnerability some time ago was also recognized by users, making Samsung realize the importance of quickly solving problems. The requirements of corporate users for device security also made Samsung unable to neglect.

HTC, LG, and Sony said they would take countermeasures to the Stagefright vulnerability in August, but no further plans were announced.

Although Google and Samsung have brought a better security update mechanism this time, the actual scope of action is still very limited. For Android phones other than Nexus and Galaxy, what should they do when faced with vulnerabilities?
