Ubuntu Touch wants to make a comeback: new technology can run Android apps

I don't know if you still remember the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system jointly developed by Meizu and Ubuntu. Since Canonical announced the abandonment of the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, the UBports community has been paying attention to this project. The community has been collecting user feedback and focusing on improving the user experience.

In order to attract more users, UBports announced Project Anbox (Android-in-a-Box). According to user needs, Anbox will become a feature for running Android applications on Ubuntu Touch. In the next few weeks, UBports will release a pre-alpha version of Anbox and provide setup instructions.

For users, Anbox ensures that Android applications can be run on Linux distributions using a container-based approach to obtain the best security and performance. This approach requires fewer resources than emulating a full Android kernel, which makes sense because there are a large number of applications that are not available on the Ubuntu Touch platform. Instead of trying new ways to attract application developers to write applications for the Ubuntu Touch platform, adding support for Android applications is a better choice.

Anbox is already available in pre-alpha stages for Ubuntu Desktop, and it will soon be added as an optional feature in Ubuntu Touch.

There has been some exciting stuff going on lately when it comes to the development of Linux mobile operating systems and Android alternatives. Whether it’s the birth of new mobile operating systems (New mobile operating system eelo is born: the founder is said to be testing it on Xiaomi mi 5s!) or the development of smartphones in recent months, 2018 will undoubtedly be a year of a lot of innovation.
