Apple is still considering whether to completely rebuild Siri

Siri has been having problems since its release, and The Information reports that Apple engineers are divided over how to fix Siri, or even if it's worth fixing. According to The Information, anonymous sources (likely members of Apple's internal development team) have learned that Apple doesn't have a strong vision for how Siri should evolve. The problems are severe and Apple can't decide "whether to continue to fix her or start over."

Siri's problems and bugs are said to have started when Apple acquired it in 2010. Part of the reason was that Siri became so popular that the backend servers were not prepared to handle the millions of iPhone users. Since then, Apple has been struggling to make Siri more efficient.

The source said, "Jobs died right after Siri was released, and Apple lost its vision. They didn't have a bigger vision at the time." Since then, the project has had several people in charge, but none of them had Jobs' vision. There was allegedly a debate internally about whether Siri should be a system that answers simple questions and completes simple commands, or a full-fledged digital assistant that can handle more complex questions.

Now it seems that those forces within Apple who want Siri to keep it simpler have the upper hand, and HomePod was born in this situation. Soon after HomePod came out, everyone praised its excellent sound quality, but unanimously agreed that Siri was a lag.

In terms of third-party development, Apple's SiriKit framework lacks sincerity, and developers basically ignore its existence. The source said, "SiriKit has not attracted much attention because its functions and flexibility are very limited."

Apple reshuffled its executive responsibilities late last year, with the Siri department now under the charge of Craig Federighi, hoping that this time Siri will be different.
