Previously, the outside world has been curious whether Google's upcoming operating system Fuchsia will support Android applications like Chrome OS. Today, a new change discovered in the Android open source project confirmed that Fuchsia will be able to run Android applications through Android Runtime.
Last month, foreign media discovered two new repositories related to Fuchsia that were added to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) manifest. The first "platform/prebuilts/fuchsia_sdk" contains a pre-built copy of the Fuchsia SDK for creating Fuchsia applications. The second, "device/google/fuchsia", at the time, seemed to be a device that could be used by the Android emulator to run Fuchsia. In a new change posted to Android's Gerrit source code management, Google explained the purpose of the "device/google/fuchsia" repository. In simple terms, Fuchsia will use a specially designed version of the Android Runtime ("ART") to run Android applications. This version of ART can be installed on any Fuchsia device using a .far file, which is the equivalent of Android's APK. It's unclear when we'll see devices running Fuchsia, but as the development of the system accelerates, it's estimated that Google will officially release the system sometime this year. |
