iOS 12.3 released to support AirPlay 2-enabled TVs

After six rounds of beta testing, Apple finally released the iOS 12.3 system update this morning. This version is also the third major version update of the iOS 12 system since it was officially launched in September last year. The improvements mainly include bringing a newly designed TV App to iOS devices (not visible to domestic users), restoring the infringing functions of the domestic version, and supporting smart TVs with the "AirPlay 2" function enabled. In addition, the system stability is improved and some bugs are fixed.

Apple stated in the iOS 12.3 push notes:

AirPlay 2

• AirPlay 2 now supports sharing videos, photos, music, etc. directly from iPhone and iPad to AirPlay 2-enabled smart TVs
• With just one tap, the TV show or movie you choose plays on the screen you were last using, based on time and location
• Siri suggestions for movies and TV shows now include AirPlay options
• Smart suggestions are made entirely on the device, so your personal information remains private

This update also includes bug fixes and improvements. This update:

• Apple Music's "For You" tab is updated multiple times a day to recommend music based on your favorite genres, artists, and moods
• Resolves an issue that could cause Wi-Fi calling to drop
• Fixed an issue where song information on a connected iPhone might not be displayed on the car screen

Updates not mentioned in the update notes include:

1. Special changes to the Chinese version

As Apple and Qualcomm reached a comprehensive settlement, two features that were previously cut to avoid the sales ban in China - the animation when deleting apps by swiping gestures on the iOS background interface and image scaling when setting iPhone wallpapers - have been restored.

2. New TV App

Apple redesigned the TV App with iOS 12.3, bringing a new look and functionality. The new version of the TV App also has a new machine learning recommendation engine that can recommend personalized content based on what users like.

The new version of the TV App will be available in more than 100 countries and regions starting today, but the app is not supported for use in China.

3. Applications become slimmer and run faster

Thanks to the new Swift 5 adaptation, all iOS apps are smaller in size and start up faster than before. iOS 12.3 will be smoother in operation than before, and the standby time is expected to be slightly improved.

In addition to iOS 12.3, Apple also released macOS 10.14.5, watchOS 5.2.1, and tvOS 12.3 system updates, as well as the 12.3 software update for HomePod (the update can be automatically installed after the paired iOS device is upgraded to iOS 12.3).
