iOS 12.4.1 released, may fix jailbreak vulnerability

iOS 12.4.1 released, may fix jailbreak vulnerability

Apple recently released the official version of iOS 12.4.1, one month after the release of iOS 12.4. You can visit Settings-General-Software Update to upgrade. This time Apple suddenly released iOS 12.4.1, which may be to fix the jailbreak vulnerability.

After the release of iOS 12.4, the jailbreak community discovered that the vulnerability that had been fixed in iOS 12.3 was accidentally reopened, which also led to the direct release of the iOS 12.4 jailbreak software.

Updated list:

  • Available for: iPhone 5s and later, iPad Air and later, and iPod touch 6th generation
  • Impact: A malicious application may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges
  • Description: An issue was addressed with improved memory management.
  • Credits: CVE-2019-8605, discovered by Ned Williamson in collaboration with Google Project Zero

The fix was originally released on May 13 for iOS 12.3, which was intended to protect Apple mobile devices (including iPhone 5S and later, iPad Air and later, and sixth-generation iPod touch) from a vulnerability that could lead to a jailbreak. The vulnerability was fixed at the time, but the subsequent iOS 12.4 update inadvertently removed the patch, leaving the devices vulnerable again, so it was necessary for Apple to quickly release this supplemental update.

On a support page announcing the update, Apple added: "We'd like to thank @Pwn20wnd for their help." Apple did not mention the team that accidentally deleted the initial patch, or the team that may have had to work around the clock to correct the mistake.

Other supplemental updates sent by Apple that day included watchOS 5.3.1, tvOS 12.4.1, and macOS 10.14.6.
