It’s too dazzling to use mobile phone at night. Is it useful to turn on night mode?

In the information age, mobile phones have penetrated almost every aspect of life. Some people keep checking their phones even before going to bed. Can our eyes bear staring at the phone screen for a long time? Some netizens said that there is no need to worry too much, because their phones have a "night mode". So what exactly is "night mode" and can it really protect the eyes?

Night Mode, also known as dark mode or dark mode, is a high-contrast or inverted color display mode. This mode is becoming more and more popular because, compared with the traditional black text on a white background, this black background with white text is generally considered to relieve eye fatigue and is easier to read. Whether it is to "not disturb the sleeping people around you" or to "protect your eyesight", the purpose is to make the overall brightness of the screen closer to the night environment, thereby reducing the stimulation to your own or others' eyes.

To achieve brightness and color on the screen of electronic products, the three primary colors RGB, namely red, green and blue, are used. These three colors make up the various colors we see. We often come into contact with smartphones and tablets, and their screens emit blue light, which is characterized by high energy and short wavelength. The blue light spectrum is 450-495nm, and the photon energy is 2.5-2.75eV, which is the highest energy light in visible light.

Exposure to blue light can cause damage to retinal cells, and in severe cases, lead to decreased or even loss of vision. This is why we often find our vision gradually deteriorating after playing with smartphones late at night.

Since the wavelength of blue light is short, the focal point does not fall on the center of the retina, but a little closer to the retina. Therefore, in order to see the screen clearly, our eyeballs will automatically be in a tense state. If we stay in this state for a long time, our eyes will naturally become tired. This is why we feel dryness and pain when we close our eyes after looking at the screen for a long time.

In addition to being harmful to the eyes, blue light also affects the secretion of melatonin in our body, which promotes sleep and adjusts jet lag. In other words, blue light inhibits our sleep. This is why when we play with smartphones at night, we become more and more excited, but after putting down our smartphones, we still feel very tired and cannot fall asleep.

After adding the night mode, I found that the screen brightness was reduced and the screen suddenly turned yellow. Why is this happening? The first reason is that the screen color is composed of red, green, and blue. Since we know that blue light is harmful to us, we naturally have to reduce its existence. When the blue light is reduced, the color of red and green light overlapping appears, and this color looks yellowish.

The lowered screen brightness and warmer colors are actually quite helpful for our sleep. So if you want to play with your phone at night, it is best to turn on the night mode. The "night mode" is indeed a good update, but it should be noted that the dark mode may make you feel that the light is dim, but it still cannot remove blue light.

At the same time, after turning on the dark mode, the screen becomes relatively darker, and our pupils will also change. Our pupils will control the amount of light entering according to the surrounding environment. Think about it, when the sun is very strong outside, we will pull up the curtains to prevent too much light from entering. When the light outside is weak, in order to see clearly, we will open the curtains to let in more light.

The same is true for pupils. In dark mode, pupils dilate to allow light to enter. Reading in dark mode for a long time will cause eye fatigue and eye soreness.

How to protect your eyes

It seems that neither the eye protection mode nor the dark mode can directly protect your eyes. If you want to rely on these two modes to truly protect your eyes, it can be said that you are soaking wolfberries in a thermos cup.

What really determines whether your eyes are good or not is your eye habits. Some people sit at their desks all day and play with their phones in the middle of the night. At this time, even if the screen's eye protection mode is turned up to full, it will not help for people who stare at the screen for a long time. So when playing with your phone at night, try to turn on the lights so that the screen brightness is not too different from the surrounding environment.

When you develop a habit of using your eyes, the eye protection mode of your phone may be the icing on the cake. But if you use it for a long time, the eye protection mode alone will not help your eyes much. No matter what, "stop playing, put down your phone and rest your eyes." is always the best secret to protect your eyes.
