Android 14 system causes trouble, Google Pixel 6 phone storage space cannot be accessed after upgrade

On October 18, every time Android releases a new major version, there will be some bugs and problems. Android 14 seems to be an exception. Initial reports show that Pixel 6 and 7 users have praised the system, saying that it improves the heat dissipation and battery life of the phone. However, some Pixel 6 users are not so lucky. After installing the latest Android 14, although they did not encounter problems such as overheating, they encountered greater troubles. Their phones had storage problems, and in some cases they could not even access the phone’s internal storage and the files stored in it.

Without access to internal storage, some apps also had issues as they were unable to download any data to the phone, and using the Files app to free up space didn't work. The phone only showed the space taken up by apps, and for the other categories - Downloads, Pictures, Videos, Audio, and Documents - the storage space taken up was shown as zero.

Some users have also experienced random app crashes and "storage full" issues, even though their phones actually have plenty of free storage space.

This issue seems to only affect Pixel 6 users with multiple user profiles. The Verge editor Umar Shakir tried to reproduce the bug on his Pixel 6a, and although he did not encounter the exact same problem, his phone crashed multiple times and even once had a "system interface unresponsive" error, indicating that this bug is indeed related to multiple user profiles.

Switching to a secondary profile is reportedly going to fix the issue, but you will not be able to access any apps or files associated with the primary profile.

Strangely, this issue does not seem to affect Pixel 7 models. If you have multiple user profiles on your Pixel 6, avoid updating to Android 14 until Google rolls out a possible fix. Google has not officially acknowledged this issue, and IT Home will keep an eye on it.
