Apple products to watch in 2024: iPhone 16, Apple Intelligence, and other expected "Glowtime" releases

Apple will launch the iPhone 16 at its "It's Glowtime" event on September 9; the live broadcast will begin at 10 a.m. local time next Monday.

The invitations, which were released last week, feature the slogan "Glowtime" and a matching color scheme.

Judging from the color scheme of the icon that resembles Siri, we can probably guess that the main feature of this release is Siri, which has the highest AI content.

1. Apple Intelligence and Siri

Back in June at WWDC, Apple finally unveiled its approach to generative AI. The approach used by this product is very Apple-like, and even the name “Apple Intelligence” cleverly borrows the familiar AI acronym. Apple Intelligence for iPhones takes a “small model” approach, as it is trained using limited data and is driven by improving the user experience.

This path is significantly different from the larger "black box" models such as OpenAI and Google Gemini. This is also a point of expectation and observation for the widespread release of Apple Intelligence. What does AI on mobile phones look like? To what extent can Apple achieve it? It can be said that the answer given by "Glowtime" depends on it.

How all this relates to “glow time” can be found in Siri. In June, Apple announced a new glow feature for the smart assistant, which removes the familiar colorful Siri circle when the assistant pops up and replaces it with a glowing border around the display when Siri is listening/processing.

But what’s even more surprising is the excellent screen perception and cross-app action capabilities. Apple gave an example of Siri being able to find your driver’s license photo, extract your ID number and enter it into a web form.

But at the launch event, only two models were able to run Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

According to the company, this is due to limitations of older chips. Given that the non-Pro iPhone 15 models are actually running the iPhone 14 Pro's chipset, you can decide for yourself whether you think the iPhone 15's exclusion is entirely a hardware issue.

With all of this in mind, next week's event is the perfect opportunity to announce that Apple Intelligence will be coming to the new iPhone lineup.

2. iPhone 16, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

1. Large display, smaller bezel

Apple is moving step by step towards the goal of a truly borderless display. According to a recent leak, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may be equipped with a larger display thanks to smaller bezels, from 1.5 mm to 1.4 mm. A difference of 1 mm will give you a very different feeling, as you can see in the picture below.

This would reportedly increase the Pro Max's screen size from 6.69 inches to 6.86 inches without increasing the device's overall footprint too much. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is already a big phone. The iPhone 16 Pro, meanwhile, is said to jump from 6.12 inches to 6.27 inches.

2. Camera lenses are thinner and lighter

Camera improvements are an inevitable trend in every year's update. The most interesting are the new glass molded lenses, which are thinner and lighter while greatly improving the optical zoom capabilities. Optical zoom features are worth paying attention to because they do not suffer from the image quality degradation problems that digital cameras suffer from.

The leaked mockups from the beginning of this year gave us a rough idea of the design of each model. The most striking thing about the 16 and 16 Plus is the shift from a diagonal camera setup to a vertical camera setup. At the same time, a new "shoot" button has been added, which will make it more convenient for different apps to "quickly access different camera" functions.

3. Bigger battery, WiFi7

Beyond that, the most welcome change is probably the bigger battery. Screen and camera improvements are nice, but battery life is still a struggle. Industry reports indicate that Apple is making it easier for users to replace the battery. Given that the company has begun offering home repair options as more governments and localities pass right-to-repair laws, this news is certainly expected.

The Pro models are also expected to get Wi-Fi 7 support, which will be a huge boon for the latest wireless standard.

In addition, Apple Watch Series 10/Ultra 3, AirPods 4, and new Mac products will also be unveiled one by one.
