Weibo cracks down on illegal accounts and curbs the confrontational behavior of young fans

On the evening of July 14, Weibo administrators released a #Weibo Community Announcement# in order to actively respond to the requirements of the Cyberspace Administration of China's notice on launching the 2020 "Clear and Bright" special rectification of the summer Internet environment for minors, and to focus on rectifying the hate-mongering behaviors that incite and provoke confrontation among young fan groups. It was noted that some of the first batch of illegal accounts rectified had participated in the controversy surrounding the “deceased user account” incident. On July 10, the site publicly accepted user complaints about "accounts that spread hatred and incite groups to attack each other" in an announcement to @Weibo Administrators.

Based on user complaints, the site has collected hundreds of illegal accounts that spread hatred and is currently verifying the situations one by one. Today, the violations of 20 accounts were announced, and they were banned for 3 months and their fans were cleared.

Weibo attached screenshots of some of the illegal accounts posting content promoting hatred. It was found that these accounts had posted content related to the recently hotly discussed Weibo post about allegedly selling accounts of deceased users and posted fan support content. Some accounts condemned the behavior of fans of a certain idol using the account of a deceased user to support the idol, while some accounts supported a certain idol star. The two sides engaged in a war of words.
