App Store 10-year data report: In the past year, games only accounted for 31% of downloads, but revenue was as high as 75%.

Since its launch in 2008, Apple App Store has been launched for 10 years. On June 1, AppAnnie, an application analysis and market intelligence agency, released a report titled "10 Years of iOS App Store Data Overview." The report reveals the evolution of the iOS App Store over the past 10 years, the continued rise in downloads and user spending, and predictions for the future development of the App Store.

According to AppAnnie statistics, as of December 2017, App Store user downloads have exceeded 170 billion times and user spending has exceeded US$130 billion.

In 2017, 2,857 apps generated $1 million in consumer spending

Data shows that since 2010, nearly 10,000 apps have generated more than $1 million in user spending. In 2017, 2,857 apps generated $1 million in consumer spending — 564 of which generated more than $10 million in consumer spending. In 2012, only 770 apps generated $1 million in consumer spending. This also means that the five-year (2012-2017) compound annual growth rate of this data reached 30%.

The agency predicts that globally, more apps will have user spending reaching $1 million to $10 million.

In 2017, the App Store, which only accounted for 30% of global downloads, had twice the revenue of Google Play.

Globally, user spending on iOS is growing faster than downloads — despite the App Store accounting for only 30% of global downloads, its revenue was nearly double that of Google Play in 2017.

App Annie predicts that over the next five years, App Store user spending will grow 80% - from $42.5 billion in 2017 to $75.7 billion in 2022, with a five-year (2017-2022) compound annual growth rate of 12.2%.

In 2017, games accounted for only 31% of downloads, but 75% of consumer spending

Games remain the primary driver of growth in App Store user spending. In 2017, although games accounted for only 31% of all downloads, they accounted for 75% of user spending - the consumption intensity of iPhone users in the Asia-Pacific region was particularly eye-catching. According to statistics, as of now, the number of apps released by the App Store has reached 4.5 million. Among them, games accounted for 77%.

The United States (36 billion) is still the largest iOS app market , followed by China (27.7 billion).

In recent years, the App Store application economy has seen the strongest growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Although the United States still ranks first in the world in terms of downloads (40.1 billion times) and user spending ($36 billion). However, China is close behind with 39.9 billion downloads and $27.7 billion in user spending. In addition, surprisingly, the number of user downloads in Japan was only 9.5 billion, but user spending was as high as US$25.2 billion, ranking third in the world. It is not difficult to see that the generosity of Japanese players in spending money per capita should not be underestimated.

In 2017, Asia Pacific accounted for 49% of global downloads and 59% of global user spending.

In 2017, Asia Pacific’s total downloads have steadily climbed to 49% of the global total, and consumer spending accounted for 59% of the global total—a figure that skyrocketed after the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were released in China (October 2014). In contrast, the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region and the Americas both accounted for 26% of global downloads, but user spending in EMEA countries only accounted for 14% of the global total, while user spending in the Americas accounted for 27%.
