The larger the Cordyceps sinensis, the more expensive it is. It is usually used to make wine, soup, or ground into powder for consumption.

China is the main production area of Cordyceps sinensis because Cordyceps sinensis is only produced in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Cordyceps is mainly distributed in high altitude areas between 3500 and 5500 meters in Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu and Yunnan (the altitude has risen in recent years). The Cordyceps producing areas above 4500 meters are called "large-sized Cordyceps" producing areas. The more famous producing areas include Yushu and Guoluo in Qinghai, Nagqu, Qamdo and Litang in Ganzi in Tibet.

Tibet, located in the southwestern border of China, has a land area of more than 1.22 million square kilometers. Due to its high altitude and lack of oxygen, complex and diverse geographical environment, special ecological environment, vast land and sparse population, and little human impact on the natural environment, it has extremely rich animal and plant resources. Cordyceps sinensis is distributed in 43 counties in the vast eastern, northern, central and southern regions, which account for more than 46% of the autonomous region's area.

In 17 counties in the vast eastern and southern regions, which account for more than 35% of Qinghai Province, Cordyceps sinensis is distributed over large areas, accounting for more than half of the world's Cordyceps sinensis production. They are: Yushu County, Zaduo County, Chengduo County, Zhiduo County, Nangqian County, and Qumalai County in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai.

Maqin County, Gande County, Dari County, and Jiuzhi County within the jurisdiction of Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Hualong Hui Autonomous County in Haidong Prefecture, Qinghai Province.

Cordyceps sinensis grows and reproduces in the bodies of moth insects. It is generally located at an altitude of 3500-5400m and grows in alpine meadows. It takes 2 to 5 years to complete a generation cycle. The moth larvae are omnivorous, resistant to waterlogging, cold and hunger. They eat Polygonum multiflorum, Polygonum villosa, Tibetan moss, etc., and grow in soil rich in organic matter. The main identification points of Cordyceps sinensis are: (1) The body of the insect is similar to that of a silkworm, with a dark yellow surface and ring patterns; (2) The head is reddish brown, and the feet are nail-shaped and pointed; (3) The length of the fruiting body is about 2.5 cm.
