New media operators must survive by relying on thinking, not skills!

Many people who are just starting out or have been working for a while will ask you what you need to know to operate new media or directly ask you what your special skills are (I feel a bit like Xiao Shen Long)? In the words of comedian Xiao Shenlong, my special skill is to drink some gasoline, light my butt on fire and fly!

Without going into too much detail, let’s talk about what is required for new media operations ?

Basic skills: editing, aesthetics, and self-discipline

This is a basic skill that a new media editor must have, no matter whether you are using WeChat public accounts or other media platforms.

There is no need to explain too much about editing skills. You need to be proficient in operating and using the backend of any platform (including the third-party editors that are springing up like mushrooms after rain)

Aesthetic ability may not be innate, but it needs to be gradually cultivated - what kind of pictures are good-looking and appropriate; what kind of layout is comfortable; how to arrange the ratio of pictures and texts, these are all things that need to be paid attention to.

Many people may ask what kind of ability is it to be strict with oneself?

To put it bluntly, it means overcoming your laziness and not slacking off at work. To give the most common example, you may edit an article several times using an editor, and there is always one place that is not aligned, which makes you annoyed. And then just like that, it was sent out!

This kind of thing will happen once, then twice, then three times. Over time, you will get used to it. The requirements for layout and yourself will gradually decrease

Only if you do your job well and perform differently from others will you have the opportunity to be promoted. If we are in the position of new media operations specialist, we remove the thinking aspect. So in terms of editing skills and aesthetic abilities alone, is there either one that is irreplaceable?

Secondly: copywriting planning, event operation and empathy

After having worked as an operations specialist, you, with your outstanding abilities, should have been promoted to the position of operations supervisor. At this stage, you are not just busy with simple tasks such as copying, pasting, and removing watermarks. You now need to have your own set of ideas and your own set of copywriting organizational skills.

Copywriting planning skills require you to have a pair of hands that can at least write something unique, even if they are not as good as a whiz!

Event operation is a skill that every operator needs to master. Both online and offline events are needed to gain exposure and attract new customers. The main point here is that the KPI of event operation is not just as simple as fans. Before doing an event, you need to seriously consider whether the platform positioning and fan user group portrait can be connected.

Many people would come to me for advice on why we organized an event: it cost a lot of money, the time was very tight, and a lot of fans started to come in. Why is there no effect when we do subsequent conversions?

An important factor here is: Have you considered the match between the event theme, participating groups and platform positioning before the event?

You work as a software developer. What kind of cute baby activity are you doing to attract fans? Do cute babies have anything to do with you?

Before doing any copywriting or activities, consider it from the user's perspective. If I were a user of the platform, would I be interested in reading the entire text of this activity/copy? Will I be eager to forward it to my circle of friends to share with everyone? Would I be interested in participating in this activity?

Lower the level or threshold, don't be too excited. Do you post every article you write to your friends circle without any hesitation?

Don’t imprison yourself in your own thoughts and entertain yourself!

Finally: Business talks and childlike curiosity

Above the supervisor is the director. At this level, the main daily duties are supervision work, business negotiations, and resource allocation. When you reach the level of director, the daily resource accumulation is basically enough to control and support the needs of the department and the company.

But at this stage, the mistake most people make is that they think everything is OK with them. You may not take new things or things that people talk about in daily life seriously. In fact, what you need to do at this stage is to empty yourself, humble yourself and be curious about everything. Because the thinking at this stage is enough for you to control and design some fun, explosive and shocking activities or events.

After saying so much, I still want to emphasize one concept: skills are the foundation of life, and thinking is the real skill that is unobstructed and metaphysical.

From what I have learned since I started working till now, I can run an entire department on my own (graphic design, web page coding, video editing, website building, flash animation, copywriting, data analysis , business negotiation...), but what's the use of that? If I relied solely on this skill, I think I would have died of exhaustion long ago!
