My friends in operations always ask me to recommend a list of books, but I don’t know what to recommend because I don’t think reading can solve the urgent need to enter the industry or solve problems. Reading should be a way of life, and the benefits can only be felt after a long period of accumulation. This article will talk about my suggestions for operations practitioners on reading, and finally recommend 15 books that I think are good. The core qualities of operations are, first of all, the understanding and application of human nature, such as the study of individual psychology and group attributes, and the exploration of industry development; secondly, Internet professional skills, such as the ability to execute work through content, activities, users and other methods. The two are the relationship between "Tao and Shu". I personally think that the "Tao" of the former is more important. Only when you truly master the principles and laws and summarize the methods can you solve various problems. The value of "skill" is the method of doing specific things, the solution, and the ability to implement ideas and plans. However, it does not have replicable properties. Your successful method for product A may not be applicable to product B because it is restricted by many objective conditions, such as corporate culture, product positioning, resources, superiors, etc. That’s why even though articles like “5 million DAU in three months” or “a million followers in 10 days” may make you excited, you still won’t have changed anything when you go to work the next day. Those "skills" belong to others, you cannot copy them. Let me give you an example. My weakness is my ability to appreciate content. I really want to make up for it, so I talked to my superiors, hoping to get some good advice. The conclusion of the discussion is that the standard of high-quality content cannot be measured by numbers, such as the number of views, replies, likes, etc., which rely on people's aesthetic ability of text. Any company that does a good job in content quality must have a group of people who have a feeling and pursuit for words, and also have such a team culture. There is no direct shortcut to improving this ability. Regardless of family and educational background, it can only be cultivated by reading excellent articles, or having such colleagues and friends around you to influence and motivate you. Looking back, I was initially only concerned with how to improve my ability to appreciate text, which remained at the level of "technique", but the final answer has risen to the level of "Tao". Since the Tao is so important, how do we cultivate this power? I think it is: read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles. Through reading, socializing, traveling, and a wide range of hobbies and interests, continuous accumulation and sedimentation can increase the depth and breadth of knowledge and establish three views. Among the above methods, reading is the most convenient to implement. Now let’s get to the point: how should operations practitioners view reading? Reading is a less purposeful way of life and learning. Its value lies more in the accumulation of knowledge, the enrichment of one's spiritual life, and the occasional enlightenment of one's own writing. The conclusion of the above is that operations practitioners can cultivate the "Tao" through reading, so when choosing books, they should no longer hold a short-sighted mentality, as if reading this book is equivalent to stealing the answers to the college entrance examination and allowing themselves to enter a prestigious school. I think books with these characteristics should be chosen carefully: 1. With the recent hot words as the theme, such as micro-business/WeChat, O2O, Internet+, etc. After all, it takes at least several months to write a book from the beginning to its publication, which is not something that can be responded to quickly. If it really caters to hot topics, I would worry that the content is cobbled together. 2. Find out more about the author. The quality of a book cannot be judged by the author's information, but the direction or selling points of the book can be judged. For example, a critic who does research will not be good at writing practical content; for an author who has published books before, you can look at his previous works. 3. Pay attention to the publishing house. Not to mention other industries, books in the Internet field generally belong to the business management category. In this field, CITIC Press, China Machinery Industry Press, and Electronics Industry Press are all good. 4. The biography signed by a big shot is not a real biography. The authors of the books are big names, such as Zhou Hongyi and Liu Qiangdong, but they are not necessarily personal biographies in our traditional sense. Many of them are oral accounts or collections of previous articles. 5. Don’t trust book lists easily. Since the book list has a high number of views, many people will publish such content. Personally, I don’t believe that the authors of book lists have read the books they recommend, because the quality and level of most of the books on the lists are uneven, and there are many bestsellers nowadays. A best-seller does not necessarily mean it is a good book, just like a popular movie is not necessarily a good movie. I suggest you read more books like this. Here is a list of books: 1. Human nature and psychology This is the book related to "Tao", which requires in-depth study and frequent reading, and the benefits to oneself will be long-term and multi-faceted. The following two books are recommended: 2. History Similar to the first point, these are also books on practicing Taoism, including both domestic and foreign, ancient and modern. The following three are recommended: 3. Big Brother Although some big guys have recently published books based on oral narration, we can still dig out some good classics. The following four are recommended: 4. Internet Classics There are also some classic books on cultivating the Tao on the Internet, which have been recommended many times. I will list six of them as follows: Finished writing. Han Xu is a columnist for Bird Brother's Notes. His WeChat public account is: Operation Dog Work Diary. Everyone is welcome to follow him.
