Judging from the monthly income of university graduates who started their own businesses within six months in the past five years, the monthly income of self-employed people continues to be higher than the average level of graduates of the same year.

Graduates of computer majors have higher monthly incomes

This report is divided into two parts: undergraduate and vocational, and was written by the MyCOS Research Institute. The survey data is based on questionnaires conducted on the class of 2019 (national sample of 274,000) six months after graduation, the class of 2016 (national sample of approximately 55,000) three years after graduation, and the class of 2014 (national sample of approximately 43,000).

The survey shows that the average monthly income of undergraduate graduates in 2019 is 5,440 yuan, and the average monthly income of higher vocational graduates is 4,295 yuan; excluding the impact of inflation, compared with the 2015 class, the starting salary of undergraduates has increased by 23.6% in the past five years, and the starting salary of higher vocational students has increased by 15.7%. The report said that compared with the income of urban residents, the monthly income of the 2019 graduates was significantly higher than the average monthly disposable income of urban residents in 2019 (3,530 yuan).

From a professional perspective, the subject area with the highest monthly income for undergraduate graduates in 2019 is engineering (5,809 yuan), and the lowest is history (4,592 yuan). Graduates of undergraduate majors such as computer science, electronic information, and automation have higher salaries, with the average monthly income of the 2019 class being 6,858 yuan, 6,145 yuan, and 5,899 yuan respectively. Regardless of whether it is undergraduate or vocational college, graduates with computer majors have higher salaries.

The income of self-employed people is higher than the average level of graduates of the same year

The survey shows that the proportion of self-employed undergraduate graduates in 2019 is 1.6%, and the proportion of self-employed higher vocational graduates is 3.4%. As the time of graduation increases, the proportion of graduates starting their own businesses continues to rise. The proportion of undergraduate graduates who started their own business within six months of graduation in 2014 was 2%, which rose to 4.1% within three years of graduation and to 4.8% within five years of graduation.

In terms of income, judging from the monthly income of university graduates who started their own businesses within six months in the past five years, the monthly income of self-employed people continues to be higher than the average level of graduates of the same year.

Taking undergraduates as an example, the monthly income of self-employed undergraduates in 2019 reached 6,257 yuan, which is 817 yuan higher than the undergraduate average level (5,440 yuan). Five years after graduation, the salary advantage of entrepreneurs has further expanded, with the monthly income of self-employed people reaching 16,328 yuan, 6,487 yuan higher than the average level of undergraduate graduates (9,841 yuan).

In terms of industry selection, "education industry" is the main field for self-employment of college students in 2019 (undergraduate: 24.5%, higher vocational: 10.5%), focusing on education and vocational training, primary and secondary education, as well as literature and art, design, and sports.

The report said that graduates starting their own businesses will help create more employment opportunities, and related fields such as education and retail may become the first choice for graduates to start their own businesses because of their low threshold for entrepreneurship.
