As operations become more and more popular, many students who are just entering the workplace may consider engaging in operations work.

1. Newbie on the road: How do I do my operations work?

The current operating situation in the workplace is:

Salary: 0-1 years of experience salary is 4-6K; 2-3 years of experience salary is 6-8K; 4-5 years of experience salary is 10-12K;

Work: Operations work is diverse and varied, as can be seen from the above division of labor. Apart from technology, finance, and business, basically all other work falls within the scope of operations. So if you have customer service work and need to upload and unload articles, don’t complain, we are all the same.

For novices who want to do a good job in operations, I would like to share a few points of experience summarized from my daily work, hoping to help everyone clarify their ideas and take up their posts calmly.

2. Tidy up your house organize your computer

When you enter a new company, the HR lady will come back to you to sign the employment contract, familiarize you with the environment and get to know your new colleagues; then, what will you do when you sit at your workstation? Browsing the web? Waiting for a job assignment? still?

3. Understand the work before you start - learn to use mind maps

From my perspective of leading new employees, most students can work diligently, do the assigned work well and produce results; but there are also many basic problems that are clearly exposed. For example, when work was assigned on a certain day, three students were assigned what tasks to do. Some students thought they were clear about what they were responsible for, but the results they received did not meet the requirements. Some even repeatedly asked their leaders how to solve problems when they encountered problems at work, or they just did their work without asking and repeatedly revised the results. Such working conditions are unqualified.

Don't underestimate it, there are many students who have this problem. Students who are interested will first ask what kind of work needs to be done when assigning tasks. Excel, Word, PPT, etc.? For example: Ask you to collect information about what the community should do? Be prepared to use Excel to give the results; let you collect information about competing products, preferably using PPT, etc. (Using the wrong office software for different work content will lead to poor results)

Secondly, don't rush to do it after receiving the task. Although efficiency is important, it is not the first factor to consider. First, figure out how to carry out the task. Open Baidu Mind Map and sort it out online . If you are not clear or need assistance, you can consult and communicate with your leader immediately, instead of taking a day or two to ask a question as you encounter it. Afterwards, you can decide which state you think is more efficient.

Again, only when the work content is sorted out to the implementation state and has a clear overview, you can carry out the preparation work according to the flowchart and will not enter the negative cycle of thinking about how to do it while doing it.

4. Understand your company people, products, relationships

If your project is going smoothly, the workload will accumulate and the efficiency requirements will become higher and higher. At this time, you are no longer fighting an individual battle (newcomers first need to highlight their personal value, gain recognition from the team or direct leader and successfully become a regular employee, etc.), but you are fighting a coordinated battle with the team. Based on the leader's recognition of your work, power will be gradually delegated to you, and you may need to complete a certain work task independently at any time.

For example: User operation , users frequently complain about a certain function of the product, which may be a problem. You make suggestions to the leader, and the leader says: OK, it can be changed, then you will be responsible for it (just an example, not involving the PM's inner feelings)

Then, you must be clear about how you, as the initiator, should implement the function smoothly; in terms of the process, you must first confirm the work of each corresponding person, and estimate when to initiate and complete it; after initiation, you need to find the UI design page, follow up on the front-end cutting, follow up on the back-end program modification, and correspondingly which sister is the front-end and which brother is writing the back-end PHP. Don't say that you are not clear about it in your team now.

Second, if you are not yet responsible for a certain sector independently, are you really familiar with your product? Knowing what functions your own APP page has and what each function does is just the basics. Knowing where most users come from, which ones they are most interested in, what resources can be used for activities, which payment method to use, what the fee is, etc., is the key to understanding the context. It is helpful for sorting out the project framework and evaluating the project status. Of course, what I said is detailed enough, but it is just to bring out an idea. Students who are interested can think in reverse and ask themselves this question. This is also an indispensable part of the process of growing from an operator to an expert. Perhaps when you change jobs, you can talk about your work from the perspective of the overall project.

5. Establish work operations thinking

The mastery of operational work methods and subsequent learning are important ways to cultivate our operational thinking. New students must at least master:

  1. Understanding of operations (including understanding of operations, classification of operations, and knowledge system of each operation part)
  2. Operational work model and departmental coordination
  3. Keep the habit of reviewing and summarizing learning

Regarding operations, my personal understanding is this: operate products through company resources (human resources, capital, channels ), continuously improve product services, and strive to achieve the optimal configuration of various indicators. The detailed classification of operations includes event operations , user operations, content operations , community operations, etc. These positions are divided and assigned different tasks according to product needs. Regarding the operation work model, first of all, it is necessary to be clear that the development of operation work is a typical "goal-driven" one. Whether it is serving the product's new additions, activities or other content indicators, operations are required to improve the data of the work content they are responsible for; all of this means that you need to have a sense of "initiative", "product responsibility" and "responsibility for results".

Keep the habit of reviewing to cultivate operational thinking (experience). In fact, most of the operational work is to maintain the relationship between the product and the user. In other words, to gain operational experience , you need to be able to switch your mindset and operate the work at hand as a "product", and then polish and optimize it through various means. This is the way to quickly gain operational experience.

As you polish and package your "product", it will continue to influence existing users, attract potential users, and interact... This entire process is your "operational experience." If you summarize and review the process well, it will become your unique learning model.

6. Start improving your skills from the “small”

If you want to learn knowledge in an unfamiliar field, first set a "transition goal" for yourself, including the problems that need to be solved at work, the skills to be acquired at work, the books to be read within the scope of operations, formulate a major topic, and then start a positive cycle of learning. In fact, operations, like climbing stairs, are complex skills composed of countless basic actions. Therefore, the growth path of an expert operator starts from very "small" basic actions, and continuously cycles upward until it is fully mastered, and finally forms his own set of playing methods, and then begins to form his own "moat".

The most basic little movements are worth spending a lot of time thinking about and practicing, such as:

  • How to plan a popular event;
  • How to establish interaction with users,
  • How to write a nutritious article?
  • How to think about and break down a problem;

The "small" skills you have mastered are the old routines. Next time you encounter the same task outline, you will get the hang of it without having to scratch your head. In fact, you already have your own operating routines, and you only need to polish them repeatedly to form a fixed pattern, making your work more efficient.

Finally, the development path of operations

Operations work can be used as the starting point for Internet work. Compared with other jobs, operations work is complicated but has advantages. It can lead to many other fields. For example, operations can be transferred to new media copywriting , planning, and products, but the reverse is actually somewhat difficult.

As a new student in operations, many people will be confused about questions like "Can I learn anything in operations and will the salary increase fast enough?" and "I feel like I have been doing this for a long time, but why is it so hard to get a promotion and a raise?"
