According to the official measurement of the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred at 5:15 am on March 8 in Dongyuan County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. The focal depth was 10 kilometers and the epicenter was located at 23.84 degrees north latitude and 114.52 degrees east longitude.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Xinfengjiang Reservoir, 21 kilometers from Heyuan City and 150 kilometers from Guangzhou City. The earthquake caused strong tremors in the area, including Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but no damage occurred.
