Will charging a new energy vehicle to 70% full damage the battery?

Recently, CCTV News' special program focused on new energy vehicles in the new productivity and invited experts to interpret why new energy vehicle owners encounter "difficulty leaving the island" and charging prices.↓↓↓

01

Why do owners of new energy vehicles have difficulty leaving the island?

How to solve it?

After the Spring Festival holiday, the ferry tickets for cars leaving Hainan Island are in short supply, and it is even harder to get a ticket for new energy vehicles, making it difficult to drive out of the island. Why do new energy vehicle owners have difficulty leaving the island? Zhang Hong, a member of the Expert Committee of the China Automobile Dealers Association, said:

Hainan is the first province in my country to clearly ban the sale of fuel vehicles. Many people believe that Hainan’s policies on new energy vehicles are relatively good, but due to the hot weather in Hainan, exposure to the sun may cause batteries to spontaneously combust, so some restrictive measures have been taken.

For safety reasons, shipping companies are worried that electric vehicles may catch fire due to exposure to the sun during transportation.

Zhang Hong introduced that with the development of science and technology, the battery structure is being rationally configured. For example, cooling and heat insulation can be realized through intelligence. It is hoped that relevant units can pay attention to the progress of battery structure and arrange shipping plans rationally. Car owners can download the smart service applet to check information such as ship number and boarding time.

02

Will the increasing number of new energy vehicles cause power shortage?

Will charging become more and more expensive in the future? In this year's "Government Work Report", automobile-related phrases were mentioned five times, including new energy vehicles, electric vehicles, and intelligent networked new energy vehicles.

In 2023, my country's total automobile production and sales will reach 30 million units, of which new energy vehicles will reach 9.5 million, accounting for 31% of the total automobile production. my country has become the world's largest automobile producer and exporter, and also the world's largest producer and exporter of new energy vehicles. At present, my country's new energy vehicles have accounted for 30% of the market, and will continue to grow rapidly in the next few years.

Some people are worried that the increasing number of new energy vehicles will cause power shortages. Ouyang Minggao, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that electric vehicles actually consume very little electricity. Even if all cars are converted into electric vehicles, the electricity consumed will only account for about 8% of the total electricity consumption of the society.

Now there are many cars but few charging piles in my country. Once there are sufficient charging piles, the market economy will promote the survival of the fittest, and through competition, costs will drop sharply, scale will increase, and then the charging service fees will drop.

Charging will become cheaper and cheaper because the price of photovoltaic electricity is getting cheaper and cheaper.

After the emergence of renewable energy, the peak and trough electricity prices vary greatly. The batteries on electric vehicles can be used as energy storage, charging during the trough period and discharging during the peak period. You can even make money from charging.

03Are there any tips for traveling with new energy vehicles?

Do research before traveling, download the app of the car brand you purchased in advance, check the location and number of charging stations, then choose a route with more charging stations, calculate the mileage, and predict where to charge.

It only needs to be charged to "70% full". Lithium batteries do not need to be fully charged, and not fully charged will not affect the battery life. When we encounter peak travel times, it is recommended that drivers charge to "70% full" and then drive away, and wait until the next service area to charge, so as to save charging waiting time.
