In the field of psychology, "autumn sadness syndrome" is a seasonal mood swing, a melancholic state associated with seasonal changes, which usually occurs in autumn and winter. Common physical manifestations include dry skin, mouth and tongue, accompanied by fatigue and sleepiness. The specific psychological manifestations are depression, anxiety, involuntary sighing, poor spirits and easy distraction.

Feng Lei, deputy chief physician of the depression and bipolar disorder diagnosis and treatment team at Beijing Anding Hospital, said that the diagnosis of seasonal depression generally requires the same symptoms to appear at the same time for at least two years. For patients with a history of seasonal depression, the risk of recurrence will be higher.

Why do we feel sad in autumn?

Modern medical research shows that the cause of depression in autumn and winter may be less sunlight, and the body's biological clock cannot adapt to the change of shortened daylight hours, which leads to physiological rhythm disorders and endocrine disorders, and changes in mood and state. People in high-latitude areas are more likely to have this seasonal mood disorder because the winter there is particularly long and the daylight hours are particularly insufficient.

There is a gland in the human brain called the pineal gland, which is very sensitive to sunlight and can secrete melatonin and 5-hydroxytryptamine. When the sunlight is strong, the pineal gland is inhibited by the sunlight and the secretion of hormones decreases; when the intensity of sunlight decreases, the pineal gland is excited and secretes more hormones, which reduces the secretion of thyroid hormone and adrenaline in the human body, and the human body will be in a state of depression and easily feel tired.

Moreover, the continuous autumn rain and the sudden drop in temperature will inhibit the body's metabolism and physiological functions to a certain extent, causing endocrine disorders, leading to depression and difficulty concentrating, creating an atmosphere and mood of "sad autumn".

In addition, autumn is the season for all things to mature and harvest, and it is also a transitional period for the human body's yang to decline and yin to grow. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, the corresponding organ for autumn is the lungs, and sadness can easily hurt the lungs. Conversely, when the lung qi is deficient, the body's tolerance capacity decreases, and it is also easy to produce sad emotions.

"Depression" or "depression"?

First of all, we need to understand one thing: "depressive mood" (such as autumn sadness syndrome) often refers to an emotional state, while "depression" is a general term for a group of diseases. The severity of depressive mood is lighter than depression. Everyone can be depressed, but not everyone suffers from depression.

Depression usually lasts for a short time and will gradually disappear. It is a transient emotional expression and will not have much impact on human functions. However, depression is different. Depression lasts for at least two weeks, and on average lasts for several months. Some people may even last for several years. It will affect work, study, life, etc., and in severe cases, it will cause suicidal tendencies.
