Why do we Chinese prefer iPhone 6 plus?

One of the characteristics of the Internet is that critics always have an upper hand over industrialists. Critics try to discredit a company or a product with a few emotional words. Ever since Jobs said at the press conference that "3.5 inches is the most suitable screen for humans, and there will be no market for anything larger than 3.5 inches", Apple's subsequent products have been called face-slapping works. Even though Apple's sales have been rising steadily three years later, critics still remember this sentence. The issue of iPhone 6/6 Plus sales has recently become a new round of verbal wars, and the battle between large and small screens has once again set off waves.

Big screen and small screen: Asians and Europeans

I looked through all the articles on the iPhone 6/6 Plus sales on the market and found that most of the arguments came from Chitika, a network traffic statistics company based in Europe and the United States, which tracked the traffic share of these two phones:

"The data shows that as of the 10th day of its release, the iPhone 6 accounted for 4.8% of the total North American network traffic, while the iPhone 6 Plus accounted for 2.3%. Obviously, the iPhone 6 is more popular."

"From the time of release to the 55th hour after statistics were collected, the traffic share of iPhone 6 reached 7.5 times that of iPhone 6 Plus."

I searched for relevant articles on Chitika and found that Chitika’s statistics were for two countries in North America (the United States and Canada), and that the iPhone 6 Plus production was seriously insufficient and delayed in delivery during the first week of its release, which most likely affected the Plus’s network traffic within 10 days, so the 55-hour statistics are very unfair to the Plus. However, the difference does not seem to be that obvious from the 10-day results.

OK, I have found these users in Europe and America for now. What about Asian users? Internet data company AppLovin counted Internet traffic in November 2014 and found that compared with the one-sided situation of 6/6 Plus 80:20 in Europe and America, there was a subtle change in Asia. China, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines are basically 65:35, and South Korea is slightly higher at 70:30 due to Samsung GALAXY Note and LG G3.

Compared with Chitika's first 10-day data, AppLovin's November data is more reliable. From the above, we can see: 1. iPhone 6 sales are indeed higher than iPhone 6 Plus. 2. Since its launch, iPhone 6 Plus has always been in a stage of being hard to find, so when Apple planned production capacity, it controlled a certain ratio between Plus and 6 to ensure product supply. 3. Asian people prefer large screens.

Well, if we don't look at the intermediate data, my conclusion is basically the same as others. However, unlike the general pessimism about iPhone 6 Plus on the Internet, I think Apple's large-screen mobile phone still has a large market, especially in Asia. Compared with Europe and the United States, which are monopolized by operators, the popularity of 6 Plus in Asia and its emerging markets remains unabated for three reasons:

1. Europe and America are more specialized, while Asia is more of a collection

Most products are different in Europe, America and Asia, which is caused by differences in ideology, functional requirements, and social culture. Europe and America are relatively developed, with large housing areas and labor costs, and tend to use one thing to meet one need. Therefore, people in Europe and America use tablets to surf the Internet at home and mobile phones when they go out. iPhone 6 Plus is a hybrid product of tablet and mobile phone, and it is not as practical as iPhone 6 in the minds of Europe and America. In Asia, which has long prioritized resources, it is best for an item to meet multiple functions. Therefore, even if the size of iPhone 6 Plus is large enough, it still has a lot of fans.

2. High identity recognition and high brand premium.

Apple's iPhone has a unique fashion trend since its birth. In my previous article "Why Social Media Is So Valuable", I said that the highest level of the competition model is identity recognition, that is, it is not important who the consumer is, but what is important is who they can become after purchasing and using the product. The iPhone has a unique identity recognition, which is also the basis for the iPhone to control the highest value users. Previously, Apple has suppressed the identity recognition of the iPhone through the size of the phone, but this time it has been amplified through two large-screen products, and the result is that the market demand has been completely activated. In comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus has a higher recognition.

3. The most important thing is that the battery life of 6 Plus has been greatly improved

What all heavy iPhone users cannot stand the most is the battery life of the iPhone. If you use 3G/4G heavily, the battery will basically run out in one morning. The most important thing is that if you forget to bring the Lighting data cable when you go out, you can only stare blankly even if you have a power bank. This nightmare has accompanied me from 4S to 5S. The battery capacity of the 6 Plus has been objectively improved due to its larger size. It is no exaggeration to say that it can last for a whole day under heavy use. This improvement is simply a god-like existence for me. For this advantage, I would rather spend a few hundred more dollars to buy a larger 6 Plus.

So even though the iPhone 6 Plus is nearly $100 more expensive than the iPhone 6, it is still a popular product. If you are still hesitating between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone Plus, I strongly recommend that you choose the Plus, because it is still the best smartphone in the world and can last a whole day.
