Developers value the communities they belong to. VisionMobile surveyed more than 3,150 developers.

VisionMobile’s latest report, “Best Practices for IoT Developer Programs,” shows that developers value the communities they belong to and community resources, including finding information from open community resources and Q&A sites, keeping up with the latest trends, and getting professional support.

If developers value community so much, then real-life events should be the ultimate way for developers to stay connected.

Generally speaking, events like conferences, seminars, workshops, meetups, and hackathons are medium sources of information for developers.

Between 10% and 30% of developers surveyed attend events, depending on the type of event and the developer category. Workshops and conferences are the most popular, with 22% of developers each relying on these events for information, followed by meetups (18%) and hackathons (16%). In other words, attending conferences only reaches one in five developers. Events organized for developer projects are even less anticipated: only 8% of IoT developers consider large events important to support projects.

It is a good rule of thumb to organize big events for specific developers. For example, developers working on Data Mashups value formal knowledge from lectures, trainings, and workshops (10 percentage points higher than other developers), but value other conferences less (only 4 percentage points higher than other developers). Conversely, device manufacturers value the opportunities provided by hackathons more (5 percentage points higher than other developers).

Big events can only reach a limited number of developers, and are not the activities with the highest return on investment among developer projects.
