Gartner: Government IoT revenue to approach $15 billion in 2020

According to Gartner, the global government Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint electronics and communications market will total $14.7 billion in 2020, up 6% from 2019.

“Despite reduced spending due to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world are continuing to use IoT technologies and solutions to improve citizen safety,” said Kay Sharpington, principal research analyst at Gartner. “At the same time, falling endpoint and connectivity costs are making smart city initiatives more feasible.”

The largest revenue opportunities in the government IoT market in 2020 are outdoor surveillance, street and outdoor lighting, and road pricing and traffic management.

Governments put public safety first

Gartner predicts that by 2021, governments around the world will deploy 8 cameras per 1,000 urban citizens for outdoor surveillance, up from 6 cameras per 1,000 in 2019.

China is a key contributor to the growth in outdoor surveillance spending. China is investing in cameras that leverage advanced image recognition technology and will deploy 32 cameras for outdoor surveillance per 1,000 urban citizens by 2021, up from 27 in 2019.

By 2020, Greater China will account for 48% of electronics and communications spending, while the United States and Western Europe will account for 16% and 15%, respectively.

Gartner analysts predict that globally, firefighting and police drones will increase from one per 58,000 people to one per 18,000 people between 2019 and 2021.
